From Foods standard agency "nuts, and other foods called nuts such as pine nut, coconut & chestnut"
So it looks like it's not an actual nut, rather a large seed (more FSA guff).
Anyway - ask him if a wing-nut is a nut then. Or a ginger nut biscuit. (you can tell I drive DH spare can't you) Wink

shellybelly · 11/05/2006 16:03

lol i think the ginger nut one, will use that one for sure Grin

Jellyjelly ... my son is also allergic to nuts but was never tested for coconut - which isn't actually a nut. Our consultant told us to try him with a little coconut but have his piriton/epipen ready just incase. He was absolutely fine and now I can use it in baking (again) and also use coconut milk. To be on the safe side, if I were you, I'd check with your Dr before letting him try it - you know what Drs are like - one will tell you one thing (mine!) and another something different (maybe yours). Let us know how you get on. HTH

i used to have a nut allergy (dissapeared after ds was bonr???!!!) and i used to be able to have coconut. Apparently it has that name because of the shape.

I would have meds ready just in case or try it whilst sat in A&E lol!

TheHun · 11/05/2006 21:53

dd is allergic to peanuts but is fine with coconut, she wasn't even tested for it at allergy clinic, only other 'proper nuts'

joash · 11/05/2006 22:11

No - I have an nut allergy and have always been told that a coconut is not a nut.

brimfull · 11/05/2006 22:12

no it's a seed apparently,I was told this at a anaphylaxis meeting the other week.

ntt · 11/05/2006 22:31

so what's the difference between a seed and a nut?

cod · 11/05/2006 22:31

ntt you are almost a nutt

ntt · 11/05/2006 22:33
Grin

V true!

jellyjelly · 12/05/2006 12:16

Does anyone know what the difference is then?

a seed is the bit of the plant that can grow into a new plant. so all nuts are seeds, i think. not sure what the difference is from an allergy point of view, though.

joelalie · 12/05/2006 13:23

PeaNUTS aren't nuts. So the names means nothing very much.

Don't know if that helps but there we are... Smile
