Our old standby is little blini, warmed under the grill, topped with a dollop of creme fraiche and then either some smoked salmon, some caviare (just the supermarket stuff is fine) or both. You can just set out the pots of creme fraiche and caviare and a pile of warm blini and let people make their own.

Fry a load of minced onions and bacon till brown and caramelised, mix with any combination of sour cream/creme fraiche/greek yoghurt, salt and pepper, chill if you want or eat warm. Eat with chips or cut-up veg.

Store-bought puff pastry, cut in strips, twisted up with cheese, olive tapenade, or sun-dried tomato paste. Lay on foil on a baking tray and bake till brown and crispy.

Rosemary chili nuts (pecans or cashews are lush but any mixed nuts will work): sautee minced rosemary in melted butter, add dried chili flakes or chili powder. Add nuts and toss in the hot spiced butter and serve. If the nuts you use aren't salted, add some sea salt to taste.

A block of cream cheese covered with chilli sauce and topped with finely chopped mint served with tortilla chips (warning this is seriously moreish!) and baba ganoush with warm pita bread pieces

Raw cauliflower florets, carrot sticks etc to dip in Mayo mixed with crushed garlic or curry paste or mint sauce.

grill camembert for about 15 mins in a ceramic pot, with rosemary stuffed in between slits that you've cut in the rind. serve with crusty bread.

cut the tops off figs.

wrap a piece of prosciutto around it.

stick a wadge of goats cheese on top and grill until cheese nicely melted.

homemade hummus
baked dip like spinach and artichoke
crostini with nice cheeses (I know this can be more of an after-dinner but works well before too!) or olive tapenade etc.
seasoned edamame (soy beans still in shells)
roasted mini peppers stuffed with cream cheese and herbs (blitz together and thin with olive oil) - either roasting peppers myself or buying those jars of them in oil

A mixture of half Greek yoghurt and half mayo with a couple of finely chopped garlic cloves makes a fab dip.

Filo pastry parcels with various fillings, my favorite is brie and mango chutney.

Cheese straws.

sashh, please tell me more about those filo pastry bits? sound absolutely delicious.

Veggie dip- mash stilton and white wine up until dippy. Wonderful!

Grilled haloumi

Spiced/devilled pecan nuts

Beef meatballs rolled in sesame seeds on a cocktail stick

Bruschetta

Cherry tomato halves filled with bail / mint pesto / soft goats cheese

Cucumber cups filled with smoked salmon mousse

I am obsessed with canapés and menu planning - can you tell?

Blimey we just buy posh olives from the deli, some nuts and crisps!
