London restaurant recommendation required

DH wants to treat me to a fantastic meal in London. We have eaten at Claridges and wanted to book Hospital Road but can't get a table on the night that we have babysitters (typical).
So, where to go? There are so many and reviews galore - if you had the choice which would it be?

went to petrus recently (someone else paying!) that was pretty fab

If you are south of the river, I would go to Chez Bruce in Wandsworth. took DH for his birthday a few weeks ago and it was fab. Here is a menu to give you an idea (only just learnt how to do links and so am doing them right left and centre!!) \link{http://www.chezbruce.co.uk/menu.asp\menu}

Let us know where you end up and what it's like

Glass House in Kew - my favorite

WishICouldGiveUpWork · 09/05/2006 14:21

Boxwood Cafe is another Ramsay place-contemporary and nice food-slightly more casual than the others.

Twinkie1 · 09/05/2006 14:22

The Connaught Hotel.

Tower 42 - Gary Rhodes - food is excellent.

Love the gaucho grill for its plain yummy food though.

great views from the oxo tower, nice grub too.

Have a look \link{http://www.london-eating.co.uk/\here} .

foxinsocks · 09/05/2006 14:31

what sort of food do you like? Rules is nice.

bundle · 09/05/2006 14:32

the wolseley?

Marina · 09/05/2006 14:32

Had a fantastic family lunch at Sheekeys in St Martin's Lane recently. But knowing my luck with recommending nice stuff for you yoyo it will probably be shut! Blush
Honestly thought the service was the most professional in an old-fashioned sense, that I have ever experienced. Pleasant, prompt and charming. Food was lovely too and they do meat as well as vegetarian dishes (fish is their speciality).
Have also had a lovely lunch with my sister at the River Cafe in Hammersmith and would love to go back with dh (him paying)

CHICagoMUM · 09/05/2006 14:32

Club Gascon is one of my favourites.

MagicGenie · 09/05/2006 14:36

If you like seafood, go to Le Palais du Jardin on Long Acre (I think). They do delicious massive platters....seafood heaven.

bakedpotato · 09/05/2006 14:41

am with Bundle on the Wolseley

LeahE · 09/05/2006 14:52

Chez Bruce (Wandsworth) / Glasshouse (Kew) / La Trompette (Chiswick) are all run by the same bloke and are all fab.

suejonez · 09/05/2006 16:56

I used to really like Quo Vadis in Soho but haven't been there for a few years

meowmix · 09/05/2006 17:07

quo vadis is a bit disappointing these days

Alistair little in Soho (dean street?) is wonderful, the best food ever. Or I like the French House Dining Room (upstairs not the pub bit). Floradita is a nice place but the food was a bit dubious (but was Christmas so....).

OH! Mirabelle! Thats wonderful and so glam. Curzon street I think.

or really push the boat out and go to Le Gavroche. So good but my god it costs....

suejonez · 09/05/2006 18:54

Or how about River Cafe in Hammersmith or Riva in Barnes (Riva is known as the chefs choice I believe)

yoyo · 09/05/2006 20:40

Wow! Thanks for all these suggestions. I am going to print this out for DH's perusal tonight. Our restaurant splurges are few and far between so just hope we can get one for 3 weeks' time.

I used to visit my brother who lies in East london and loved it... All the places mentioned sound so glam and posh.

spangles · 10/05/2006 13:57

Sorry forgot to say have a great time out with your DH and enjoy your meal Grin

sottovoce · 10/05/2006 21:29

Have the lobster tagliatelle at chez bruce ! It's SO fabulous. And the cheese is wonderful too.... made a complete piglet of myself last time but it was worth the tight trousers the next day.

Am very Envy of you! Enjoy!
