Is this ok?

I'm 10 weeks pregnant is it ok to eat chicken breasts which are a day over the use by date?

Personally I wouldn't but more as the quality wise they might taste a bit rank than the safety issues.

Safety wise they would probably be ok as long as they were thoroughly cooked. Use by dates aren't plucked out the sky but are very carefully researched and are usually the maximum time allowed, if that makes sense?

So no if I were you I wouldn't use them (nothing to do with being pregnant or not pregnant).

Hope that helps (if my previous life I was a food safety microbiologist)

Depends on your fridge I think. Ours is really efficient and things are often completely fine a couple of days after the use by date (and I am really fussy about food and dates).

Might not risk it if I were pg though.

I wouldn't

starlover · 03/05/2006 14:47

if i wasn't vegetarian then yes, i'd eat them. it's only a day, and you're going to be cooking it which should kill off any bacteria

PrettyCandles · 03/05/2006 15:05

If the packet has been opened, then, no, I wouldn't eat it. It's not just the presence of bacteria, but also their waste products that can maek you ill, so killing off the bacteria through cooking wouldn't get rid of the waste products. OTOH, if it's an unopened pakcet, that has been kept properly chilled isnce bought, especially if the packet says 'packaged in a protective atmosphere', then I probably would eat it.

If they have yet to be cooked and they smell and look ok, I would.

If they are cooked already I'd be less likely to.

littlemissbossy · 03/05/2006 15:08

open the packet and smell them, if in doubt, bin them

PrettyCandles · 03/05/2006 15:10

If she's 10w pregnant, she'd better get someone else to smell them! I couldn't bear the smell of chicken when I was pg with dd - it always smelled off to me.
