'The Cook's Companion' by Stephanie Alexander - worth buying?

I am looking for a special present for a friend who is a keen cook. I know she doesn't have this book, but am wondering if it is really worth the investment? Advice very welcome!

My sister has it and loves it I am not a cook so can't really say!

I like it - there's information about different foods, their varieties, how to store, prepare and what other foods they go well with. As well as recipes, of course!
I think it is supposed to be a standard in most Australian kitchens - even the second edition was a bestseller!
