yes that's right, frozen within an hour of being caught is far better than sitting in a lorry on the motorway for a day. Just make sure you don't re-freeze it when raw
don't go, I love the cooking threads

suejonez · 25/04/2006 13:09

I really have to go, meeting a friend and paying a fortune for a rubbish Starbucks sandwich when I could be eating yummy braised steak I cooked last night.

Highlander · 25/04/2006 13:21

cod, more importantly - make sure his cholesterol is regularly checked. I presume he's been prescribed a statin? The cheapest aint necessarily the most effective - if he's not achieved target cholesterol (

JoolsToo · 25/04/2006 16:43

oh this is an excellent idea.

I actually hate cooking so I'll go for the easiest option every time. I still haven't tried the pesto one cod posted - that's my next taster tomorrow.

I definitely want to get into the habit of ditching the meat and eating fish, like cod I'm a bit scared of it. So far I've only tasted cod, tuna, salmon and trout (at my age too!)but have enjoyed them all. Also like Olive I'm not into bones or heads thank you very much, so I too will stick with fillets.

Noticed on one of the links a recipe for John Dory ShockShockShock

ggglimpopo · 25/04/2006 16:45

Was going to gho buy halibut and cook it a la Suzy Wong, but after crap day am going to get dh to take me out to dinner so that womsene else can cook and washup....

cod · 25/04/2006 16:53

nope no statins

OP posts:
bundle · 25/04/2006 16:53

prawns aren't that scary...

Some foods contain cholesterol. This type of cholesterol is called dietary cholesterol. Liver, kidneys, eggs and prawns are higher in dietary cholesterol than other foods.

But the cholesterol we get from our food has much less effect on the level of cholesterol in our blood than the amount of saturated fat we eat.

However, liver is also a rich source of vitamin A, which can be harmful in high amounts.

So women who are pregnant should avoid eating liver, and older people at risk of bone fracture should avoid eating liver or liver products more than once a week. People who eat liver every week might want to choose not to have it more often because the body stores vitamin A and levels can build up over many years.

saw this on Come Dine With Me - I'd miss out the butter on the wilted watercress - in fact I'd probably serve on raw spinach!!!

Sea Bass with new potatoes and wilted watercress

Serves 5

Ingredients
1kg Jersey Royal Potatoes
85g Watercress
5 fillets of fresh sea bass
Rosemary infused olive oil
150g Butter

Skin ands boil the potatoes for approximately 20 minutes – until a round tipped knife can be easily pushed through. Place in a microwaveable dish and crush roughly – do not mash. Season, add infused olive oil and most of the butter then place in microwave ready to warm through just before serving.

Take the watercress and place in a frying pan of hot olive oil and a little butter – keep moving in pan until wilted (approx 2-3 minutes). Remove the watercress and place in heated oven.

Add more olive oil to same pan, when pan is very hot place fish skin down and fry for approximately 4- 5 minutes, then carefully turn over and finish off for a further 2- 3 minutes.

To serve - layer warmed through potatoes, wilted watercress and then Sea bass. Serve with slice of lemon.

bosscat · 25/04/2006 21:16

I bought a Kilo of haddock (as you do) from someone who called to the door driving a van with boxes of frozen fish in. Is it called Sea Fresh or something? Anyway, its all lovely but you have to cook the buggers as there's a whopping great box in the freezer. I just roast it with avocado, prawns, cheese and cream sorry Cod no good for you, a la jamie oliver and thats yummy. or you can make his south american fishcakes which are nice (Jamie's dinners). failing that, roast fish any, with white wine, herbs, cherry tomatoes is always nice with salad.

JoolsToo · 26/04/2006 00:14

you can leave butter out of recipes though can't you - substitute for your spray thingy - or use a bit of the cholestrol reducing stuff?

do you think I'll become a better swimmer after eating all t his fish?

KTeePee · 26/04/2006 13:18

I went to the market today but had forgotten what fish you all suggested so chickened out and came home empty-handed. Also it seemed really expensive - most things seemed to be about £10 per pound Shock

flatmouse · 26/04/2006 13:26

OK - this is what i did last night (assuming anchovies are OK).

Stick brocolli florets in boiling water for 3 mins, scoop out(ie drain but keep water) stick in cold water to cool and leave on side.

Make croutons (tiny bit of oil mixed with - i did small cubes - baked in oven).

In brocolli water, boil tagliatelli.

Meanwhile tiny bit oil in pan - add anchovies - cook min then mash. Grate lemon rind in, add some chilli flakes/lazy chilli, and sliced garlic.

Add brocolli to pan and cook for approx 4 mins until hot. Add cooked tagliatelli.

(for those not worried about cholesterol add lashings of grated parmesan)

Yummylicious

Feistybird · 26/04/2006 13:30

Did this as a light meal the other week. Ciabatta, spread with pesto, then spread with tinned sardines, the ones in tomato sauce. Handful of spinach on top, then roasted peppers on top of that.

Sprinkle with some toasted pine nuts.

It was effin delish (so dp said).

Feistybird · 26/04/2006 13:31

Spinach not cooked btw.
