how do you fry an egg 'sunny side up' without the eggwhite spreading so much?

mine alway spread in the pan so it's difficult to separate the eggs without breaking the yolk...

FRESH eggs. The older the eggs, the runnier the white is. Also, make sure there's a good layer of fat and it's spitting hot when you break the egg in as the faster it cooks the more contained it will be.

ok, got some eggs yesterday, so they should be quite fresh.

I also tilt the pan towards me so that it stays in the same kind of area. You can also buy cooking rings, basically like a large round cookie cutter that you could put it in but it means something else to wash!!

I have a problem with eggs! I've thought about getting one of these

And as I'm in a generous mood here's how

Agree with the fresh eggs - the white gets runnier as they get older.

Also, don't keep the eggs in the fridge.

Dp spent ages trying to perfect poached eggs and he worked out that no matter how fresh the egg, the white always disintegrated if they had been kept in the fridge. The egg that had been kept out didn't. Same batch of eggs, got from friends with chickens so we could be sure the eggs were no more than two days old.

He got quite obsessed scientific about!
