Spelt

Hello all!
I saw some spelt recipes that looked interesting so thought I'd get some. Been to health food shop and bought a pack, it's got the husks on though! I asked them if that was the form it is cooked in and they said it was but now i'm home I can see from the recipes now that it should be more like pearl barley. Annoying.
So, any ideas on an easy way to remove husks? What can you use it for with them on?
Thanks!
Whizz

Forget dehusking,it's too time consuming.Either take it back, return it or swap for something else explaining the mistake or feed it to the birds.

I have been keeping my eyes out for the type of spelt that you can make into risotto for almost a year now. It's not in my local supermarket or health food shops. Obviously I could buy it online if I could be arsed but is it supposed to be so tricky to find?

Have you tried buckwheat? There are two kinds, roasted and not roasted. If you have any eastern european shop nearby they have also cracked wheat.

I've not tried buckwheat. Is cracked wheat the same as bulger wheat? I have some of that, I'm not generally mad keen on it in salads etc, only if very heavily mixed with delicious things, but haven't tried to make it into risotto.

Spelt is delicious! I use it pretty much in place of fucking pearl barley, I previously bought it at waitrose, though not bought any recently.

Thanks. What is the point selling it with husks on? Thats what i dont get, who uses it?! One up for the birds it is.

Never tried to de-husk it. I get it from Ocado ( Shapham Park or something similar is the brand) or else my local world food place stocks it - both minus the husks

Bulgur is precooked and then cracked wheat, cracked wheat is raw(not cooked)
