Cooking mishaps!

I was making fish pie tonight - made the white sauce, tasted it, thought it needed a bit of pepper, reached for it, added some, tasted -

it wasn't pepper, it was cinnamon! Grin

I did briefly consider using it, but in the end started all over again with the sauce.

Anybody have any similar stories?

Am always misreading teaspoon and tablespoon in my breadmaker recipe book - usually when using salt...

My Mum was a fantastic cook so had tons of everything in the store cupboard. When she moved she gave most of it to MIL. One of the offending items was an old sweetie jar (you know the ones you get in old fashioned sweetie shops, about 14 inches tall) full of salt. MIL thought it was caster sugar...and went on a cooking frenzy...baked 6 batches of cakes etc- and said after she realised what she'd done-"I wondered why the mixture was fizzing in the oven".
MIL is not the greatest cook. Needless to say the hens had a field day.
Does that beat your cinnamon story?!

Christmas lunch this year, I over cooked the beef and veg, boiled the christmas pudding dry and found the Yorkshire pudding burnt to a crisp after we finished eating. (MIL said the beef and veg were done just how she likes them, Shock) My worst meal ever...

Ha! Salt is always the biggest offender!

I decided to be creative and made up my own recipe for fish stew, to say it was awful would not do it justice!Dh got home and asked what the bad smell was, I even had a neighbour knock on the door to ask if I had noticed a strange aroma and did I have anything wrong with my drains.
Dh tried a few mouthfuls then said "I'm so sorry but I just can't!"
I have been tempted to make it again....the last time MIL came to stay she was so annoying I was thinking up ways to get revenge....Dh thought poisoning her was a step too far.
