Ok we bought a huge frozen turkey it was over 11 kgs.We ate some Christmas day then boxing day we picked it and froze the rest. I mean there is enough turkey bagged up in the freezer to do at good ten dinners ! anyway we took the first bag out last night and put it straight into the fridge to defrost planning on having it cold with roasties etc today. when I came down this morning something smelt very off in the kitchen and others commented on it. I've traced the smell to this turkey !
I won't eat it because I'm fussy anyway but WWYD and did I do something wrong ? I'm gutted if we have to throw out so much food . TIA

I thought you weren't supposed to re-freeze things once you had defrosted them once? I think that's where you went wrong, sorry.

Get a fresh turkey next time and freeze the left-overs - should be fine.

I would definitely chuck the rest away now.

By rights.. unless there is something very wrong with your freezer... the turkey should smell exactly the same coming out of the freezer as it did going in. FWIW wouldn't serve defrosted cooked meat cold but would always heat it to piping hot as part of something else... a pie or a pasta dish or similar.

" thought you weren't supposed to re-freeze things once you had defrosted them once? "

Doesn't apply to things that were cooked after being defrosted. Cooking destroys the bacteria and then freezing preserves that new state. You're not supposed to defrost something and then refreeze it back from raw. That's dangerous

Now boiling away in stew! Thanks tho everyone x
