Beef Bourguignon

Hi all,
I've got 5 friends coming round for NYE and have decided to do a proper meal to line our stomachs to be civilised. I am planning on Beef Bourguignon for the main (leek and potato soup for starter with home made, cheese topped roll, pudding to be sorted by friend I hope!)

Anyway, the only Burgundy wine for the beef that Tesco had was £7 and the miser in me could not buy a £7 bottle of wine to glug into food. I have bought instead a Tempranillo which was half price at £4....will this be ok do you think? If not I will get the Burgundy.

I am so desperate for this meal to go well and one of my guests is a REALLY picky eater!

Any old red wine will do for beef bourguignon! My favourite dish! I cook it sloooooow on a low heat for the beef to really melt in your mouth. Delish served with green veg and rice.

Broccoli perfect and mash lovely too. Do it with half the wine to start with then halfway through put the rest in. See if you can get the little button mushrooms and onions- they look nice bobbing around on the top and taste lovely when they have been cooking in the juice for ages! Bon appetite!

I too could not bear to pay more than a fiver for red wine - so just bought a tesco cheapo bottle - I used the Gordon Ramsay Beef Bourginon recipe - and it was so delicious - you can find it on the web easily. If you do make it, I would say you will need to thicken the sauce ( I did that at the end) Good luck!

Oh great - it's the GR one I found as well. Annoyingly it's for 4 people and I'm serving 8 now it seems. Think I will do 2 big pots...bugger, more needed.

Bloody hell we're down to 6 now (all the more beef for me!!). The smell in my house is just AMAZING at the moment!

If you have any left over you can freeze it! But in my experience that just doesn't happen- you will probably find your guests will keep dipping in and lick the bowl clean!

Well it was DELICIOUS (if I say so myself..) I used flank rather than shin and was properly falling apart. I have about 2 dinners' worth left over too :)

Does anyone know if you can cook this without wine? I know that sounds a bit ridiculous given the name of the dish but I can't cook with wine and this is a fave of mine.

Yes ou can, howeve rioting nearly as rich and you would need to have a really good quality beef stock rather than powdered. Just out of curiosity why no cooking with wine? You can get cooking wine which would work Smile

poohbear the GR one was just the first one I stumbled on and will absolutely do it again. I don't know how expensive flank of beef is as my mum gave it me, but it was so bloody full of flavour, and I think it actually tastes better today!

Oh and to top it off I had to buy a new casserole dish to make it and found one in the sales down from £49.99 to £19.99 so am feeling vair happy!

Thanks both - yes, I tend to use a v posh Heston beef stock from Waitrose (which indeed has wine in it). I'm in recovery and whilst I can tolerate some alcohol being in the house, I couldn't have wine here. Cider would be okay.

Though if you were going to use cider I think I'd go for pork or pheasant rather than beef.

Yes, trouble is pork in cider has gone quite a long way from beef bourguignon, hasn't it Grin I think I will have to content myself to buying the Waitrose one, or eating it in restaurants. Shame as Delia's recipe is lush.

I am sure you can get cooking wine with herbs in that would possibly taste grim. Or is there someone who could cook the alcohol off the wine first and give it back to you in a jug? Not helping really am I? Smile

LOL yes, I can just imagine popping round to the neighbours "just boil this up for me so I don't drink it, yes?".

I think it'd be simpler just to email a sympathetic friend the recipe and ask him or her to cook the dish for me :) (In fact I wonder if I could try that for recipes without wine as well!)
