Not giving dc margarine...............

Lauraa83 · 15/04/2006 22:27

I read a thread on here the other night on things you don't let your dc eat, I noticed lots of people said marg, so what's so bad about it? Is it better to use butter instead then?

I've used flora for years and ds has it now and then on toast, not all that often but is it better to use something else then?

Thanks:)

We don't use marg anymore either, we use butter in very small quantities and olive oil.

snafu · 16/04/2006 21:56

Yep, I give ds butter. Ate marge for years (pre-kids) and then realised what was in it and haven't touched the stuff since.

Once you start eating butter, then marge tastes like what it is - petrochemical, trans-fatty-acidy shite Grin

Lauraa83 · 16/04/2006 21:59

ok thanks:) I'll buy butter from now on then lol

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 16/04/2006 22:03

Snafu, it doesn't taste that nice! Grin

snafu · 16/04/2006 22:05

Actually, hunker, I keep a tub of Flora in my bag to use if there's no soap in the loo... Grin

chipmonkey · 17/04/2006 01:34

Apparently, hydrogenated veg oil turns your brain to mush.
Alcohol also turns your brain to mush but I still drink wine!Grin

It also has colourings and preservatives in it. All butter contains is cream and salt.

nikkie · 17/04/2006 18:48

how does the olive oil version compare?

threebob · 17/04/2006 21:02

It's the same preservatives and colourings. I have found one for ds that isn't heat treated, hasn't got colouring in, hasn't got preservatives in. it's been thickened with gums and flavoured with rosemary oil. It's from a health food shop and is massively expensive. I would love to be able to give him butter Sad

MrsSpoon · 17/04/2006 22:25

Ah but Chipmonkey wine is much more fun than marg.

chipmonkey · 17/04/2006 22:58

mrsSpoon, I couldn't agree more!Grin

Which margerines have hydrog. fat? I can't find one in my supermarket.
Those of you who don't use marg, what do you use for sandwich spread? Do you nuke the butter to get it to spread on your child's school sandwiches?

Blu · 18/04/2006 11:36

zebamama, as far as I know, all main brands of margarine aer hydrogenated fat - that's what margarine IS. And there is no legal requirement (afaik) to label hydrogenated fat or trans-fats as what they are. I believe there is a vegan margarine available in health shops which has no hydrogenated fat, made by Suma, I think.

Hydrogenisation is how they make liquid oils stay solid, and it is very bad indeed for your heart and arteries. It is also in most commercial biscuits and cakes. If you are concerned buy all-butter products such as shortbread.

I don't put butter in the fridge, and it is easy enough to spread. Anchor, lurpak and others do 'spreadable' butter in tubs, which has oil added, if you find that easier.

zebrama · 18/04/2006 11:53

Not Olivio/Bertollini, I have a pack in my hands.
I don't think any of these, do either:
Filippo Berio, Anchor Spreadable, Flora.

\link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=4&threadid=10147&stamp=030728173057\Three-year-old thread about this on MN}, saying that many, maybe most margerines in the UK don't have hydrog. fat in them, any more.

Not saying the ingredients are all wonderful, just not necess. that awful, either. And what do you all use for school sarnies instead, then?

zebrama · 18/04/2006 11:55

oops, Blush I didn't read all Blu's post before replying, can you really get butter to spread without heating it, in winter? Our kitchen must be much colder than yours.

DaddyCool · 18/04/2006 11:56

you may give me margarine if you'd like... but i'd prefer butter.

Janh · 18/04/2006 12:00

Which magazine in a test ages ago said own-brand buttery spreads are less toxic than actual marg so we use that (Sainsburys one).

Buthave lots of butter in too.

I will see if I can find the report on spreads.

elclose · 18/04/2006 12:07

flora light does not contain hydro fat
