I woldn't because if you leave it to defrost before using your worktop will be dripping wet!!

Depends what it's in. If it's in a dead body, then yes, I think you can, but you might want to cut it up a bit to fit it in the freezer.

I've heard it is possible, but apparently only with cold water, not hot.

Might just be an old wives tale though.
