Where can I buy white eggs?

I want some eggs with white shells so we can make easter eggs. Does anyone know where I can buy them in the West London / Middlesex / Surrey area?

Try duck eggs instead - bigger, and tougher shells so easier to decorate. Also have a matt surface so take watercolours etc more easily, and come in some fab colours as well as white!

Waitrose normally have a good variety of 'weird' eggs (you may get white hen's eggs here too), or try farm shops or butchers.

had this problem and Waitrose do large ones - goose I think - but if you look throught the boxes you can find pale ones which dye ok. Otherwise try a farm shop.

there was an article in the times about this, this morning - apparently waitrose do duck eggs (Gladys May's Braddock white duck eggs from clarence court apparently ! £1.85 for 6).

Bump. there must be some more Americans out there looking to decorate eggs for Easter.

Isn't it considered rude to bump a thread without acknowleging the responses that people have already posted? I don't see the point in posting a suggestion at all.

maybe our suggestions aren't good enough - perhaps Uwila doesn't have a Waitrose?

A farmer's market may also help - try \link{http://www.farmersmarkets.net/\this} website to find one near you - there are several in West London on various days of the week. \link{http://www.poultry.allotment.org.uk/Chicken_a/egg_shell_color/egg_shell_color.php\Here} is a handy index of which breed of hen lays which colour egg - if you can find a smallholder or farm who keeps one of these breeds you may be lucky.

If you still can't find any, do try using regular brown eggs - you may find a different colour 'base' fires your creativity and produces interesting results!
The flesh-like colour of brown eggs means they're really easy to turn into faces, animals etc without having to layer on too much paint.

brown eggs where I'm from are considered fancy! and white is the norm. I was really surprised to find out that white eggs are much harder to source in England
this is the first year that dd will dye white eggs ( am home for Eater!)

when i was little i refused to eat anything but white eggs and was told that brown were better for you...why are they now unusual, is it because they have a calcification problem?

Egg colour is purely a breed thing - depends on the breeds of hens kept comemrcially - some are more favoured in some countries than others (guess because of weather, temperature etc).

Wonder if white-egg-laying breeds were less amenable to battery farming when it was introduced, so are now less prevalent?

I was just really hoping for white hen eggs, as I know how long to cook them. I've never had a dock egg. I have a waitrose near me, but couldn't find any white eggs on the ocado site. And I was in a hurry so didn't type anything more than the quick bump.

Anyway, thank you for your suggestions. I have now procured one dozen duck eggs from Tesco.

duck eggs are nice..very yellow yolk and much richer tasting than hen eggs..

Mrs Badger, that a good idea on Farmers Markets. But, unfortunately, I work full time so can't possibly get to one before the end of the week.

Uwila, you have to go to a greek store. They have white eggs for painting for greek easter. I went to one near Queensway last year. Also, I'm fairly sure that our local lebanese store had white eggs (south side of the uxbridge road just east of the north circular). And I think the HooHing on the north circular carries them too (or any asian supermarket).

I totally sympathise with your plight. I went through this last year and had a real nightmare of a time finding the white eggs. I think last year greek orthodox easter was not at the same time as regular christian easter and a lot of the regular greek stores (where I had gotten them in past years) didn't have the eggs in stock last year. And the white ones that they had a waitrose had big red lions stamped on them. Also I called all the farmers markets in the london area and none of them had them. I even called the president of the UK White Leghorn Society (type of chicken that lays white eggs) and they couldn't give me any names of owners in the london area. And through all of this an idiot that I worked with kept insisting that white eggs are only laid by battery chickens and brown eggs are only laid by free range chickens and this had to be true because a french chef told him so. And didn't believe me when I kept trying to explain that it's a breed thing and that I had free range white leghorns as a child that laid white eggs. He was sure I was making it up, as if somehow I had nothing better to do than make up dumb lies about the color of chicken eggs.

I've finally cracked it!

After years of hunting for the elusive white eggs for my children to paint at Easter and being fobbed off with having to use Duck Eggs (which when boiled are not as edible), I have finally found a rich source for fresh hen laid white eggs in London.

White eggs can be bought on a stall each market day - Monday to Saturday at Ridley Road Market (off Kingsland Road) in Dalston, E8. The lovely lady who runs the stall explained that she has been there for over 30 years and her dad used to run the pub opposite when she was a child. She imports the eggs each day fresh from Holland and services a demand from catering companies and Americans - where white eggs are still the norm.
