What else can I do with fish pie mix?

I have fish pie mix that has been in the freezer for a little while. My fish pie after several attempts seems to turn out disastrous and dd isnt a fan of mash really. What else can I make with it? Its just basic cod salmon and smoked haddock no prawns or anything. Tia

Could you cook it as you would for fish pie but then put it into filo pastry to make a parcel?

stressedHEmum · 13/11/2012 14:11

You could make fish chowder or make a pasta and fish bake in cheese sauce.

put in a white sauce - same as fish pie and then top with a mix of fresh breadcrumbs and grated cheese instead of the mash (sort of hairy bikers diet book i think). or rissotto. or with pasta in cheese, white or tomatoe sauce. or fish cakes

In cheese sauce on pasta.

Poached and stirred into risotto or kedgeree.

Under pastry instead of mash.

Gumbo/bouillabaisse/random stew type thing.

Breaded like chicken nuggets.

Fishcakes - cook in milk, then flake and mix with mashed potato. Add frozen peas, form into patties and roll in flour/breadcrumbs.. Once they are fried and crunchy on the outside the mash is much nicer.
Or with white sauce and pasta. I like the sound of pasta bake too.

Fry up with garlic, butter and chilli and serve with linguini?

I'd do Jamie's fish pie sauce - fry onion carrot and celery until soft, then add tiny bit of mustard, pot of double cream, lashings of grated cheddar or parmesan, dill, lemon juice and season.

Then whack fish in bottom of dish, add chopped cooked spinach/hard boiled eggs if you like, sauce on top and then top with puff pastry lid. Eggwash for colour.

Cook on high temp for 30 mins.

I remember hearing you can add cheese to make a cheesy mash to add on top of fish pie might interest him rather then plain mash if you get me

I cook it with H/M tomato sauce & peppers & serve with pasta.
I never put cheese & fish together.

Fishcakes my choice too - I add grated cheese and chopped parsley rather than peas to the mash, but you can put a blob of cheese sauce in the middle for copycat supermarket fishcakes. I make a dozen at a time because the flouring, dipping in eggs and rolling in breadcrumbs is faffy. Freeze until solid on a baking tray, and then put in a bag to freeze and store.

Fish risotto or paella?

Mix 2 : 1 general purpose flour, cornstarch. Breadcrumps. Egg wash.

Pat-dry the fish fillets then cut each fillet into 2 pieces lengthwise (since the fillet is uneven in thickness, this operation ensures uniform cooking). Season with salt and pepper.

Prepare 3 shallow dishes: one for the flour and cornstarch, one for the egg, and one for the bread crumbs. Beat the egg lightly. Dip one fish piece at the time, first in the flour, then in the egg. Let the excess egg drip off before coating the fish in the bread crumbs. Coat all sides with bread crumbs.

Heat the oil in a skillet over medium heat. Saute the fish until each piece, until the bread crumb coating becomes golden-coloured. Add salt and pepper to taste.
Serve on the warmed plates with optional lemon quarters on the side.

Finers crossed 🤞🙂!!
