Vegans, is this bad manners?

Posted a couple of weeks ago about having some vegans round for dinner.

I cooked dismally. It was gross. I can't even remember what I made, I've blanked it out of my mind.

So I went to the library and borrowed a book on vegan cooking (my god how do you DO this every day??! What a faff btw). AM aiming to do better.

Want to know, is this bad manners: to give them fruit and soy ice-cream for dessert, whilst we have proper dairy ice cream? I cannot stand that Swedish Glace stuff, it's rank. Obviously I won't say that, but isn't it bad manners to give someone something you think is to disgusting to eat yourself? Would you be offended?

Grin Vegan cooking is exceedingly hard work for little reward imo and for some reason there have to be a lot of puns in the recipes too.

dish it out in the kitchen

that way, it LOOKS like you're eating their icecream and you enjooy your dessert

Pruni · 02/04/2006 20:19

Good idea but we eat in the kitchen.

surely they'll appreciate you making the effort, or why not ask what they like.
Sorbet might be nicer than wierd ice-cream maybe?

CODDYPANTS · 02/04/2006 20:20

I know
giev them a drink

then go into kitchen

you and dh have steak sandwhich

then come out serve them up slopa nd tellt hem actually youa rent hungry no

Greensleeves · 02/04/2006 20:20

I wouldn't bat an eyelid. It's a viable vegan alternative to ice cream, isn't it? And you'll be offering them fruit as well? And being vegans, they are probably well accustomed to the taste of soya milk and don't find it disgusting Grin. I am drinking tea with soya milk in it as we speak (I'm not vegan though :)) Surely they wouldn't expect you to eat something you don't like just to show solidarity, any more than you would expect them to eat dairy ice cream to please you!!!!

CODDYPANTS · 02/04/2006 20:20

i agree with malory

ItalianJob · 02/04/2006 20:21

I think it's fine, unless of course you know that they think Swedish Glace is rank too Grin

Oi, oi, no vegan-bashing please

I invited them so I will make weirdy food.

PMSL at vegan cookbook "How it all Vegan!" (10/10 for shit pun for a start): We are the only species that drinks another animal's milk - it's not natural. Here are some recipes for soy-milk, rice milk and other filtered sludges. Totally gross.

Also section entitled: To Bee or Not to Bee. ie do you eat honey? From the writers who say that wool is a no-no, perhaps exploiting the hard work of bees might be a bit off too. Apparently not though.

daisy1999 · 02/04/2006 20:42

imo it's rude to be vegan Grin
I won't entertain vegetarians never mind vegans Wink

edam · 02/04/2006 20:43

mmmmm pants fruit, how lovely. Remind me not to drop round yours for dinner, Cod! (You'd hate me anyway, am veggie).

Pruni · 02/04/2006 20:44

Yes to sorbet.

PMSL at cod's pantywine.

daisy that's a bit harsh!

Blu · 02/04/2006 20:48

Hasn't sorbet got egg white in it?

trice · 02/04/2006 20:49

swedish glace is vile. could you not make a vegan pud? I used to have a recipe for vegan brownies - they were delicious served with strawberries.

nooka · 02/04/2006 20:56

You need to try granita rather than sorbet, which does have eggs white in it. Granita is (I think) just fruit and ice.

cod · 02/04/2006 20:57

what is WRONG wiht an egg fgd
bet theyd eat them if they were starving
