Can you give a 1 year old pesto?

my dd is 1 next week and is getting bored of my standard repertoire (cheesy pasta, spag bol, shepherd's pie, fish pie, spag hoops Blush etc etc). thought I would give her a whirl on something a bit more exotic - is there any reason why a child shouldn't have pesto? Nothing to do with the pine nuts in it or anything?

Thanks

Well, I would. Did in fact. But maybe people are more cautious these days, my boys are teenagers now. The more tastes the merrier imo.

i did

the pine nuts are seeds rather than nuts (I looked it up a couple of months back for the same reason) so they are fine. I give dd pesto but not too often as its highish in salt but in moderation I think its fine and dd loves it !

I did with my DS now nearly 5, as QW says the more tastes the merrier, I never allowed myself to be hidebound, IYKWIM.

DS now eats paté, anchovies, olives, smoked salmon, lots of things that Shock adults.Grin

My dd (14 months) loves pesto - both red and green. Add loads of cheese to make it more "substantial" meal.

Hulababy · 31/03/2006 14:21

I did. DD loves it.

Piffle · 31/03/2006 14:33

dd adores pesto I think the salt content is the only thing to watch for.
We add creme fraiche/hummus (for protein) and veges too
DD is 3 and it is easily her favourite meal

Prufrock · 31/03/2006 14:35

My dd loved it as well, but check teh label carefully. Many commercial pests (including SACLA) use cashew nuts as well as pine nuts and so should not be given under 2 (if you want to stick to govt. advice)

I'd be lost without it, both DD and DS love pesto pasta

Pesto Pasta is a life saver! quick, filling and helps children develop a more "adult" taste. My children don't like mash potato, so this goes with all sorts of additions instead. use loads of parnesan cheese with it.
