I'd like to put together a special Christmas hamper in a 1950s-stylee as it's a special year for my DM. Any ideas on contents would be most welcome! If 1950s is a bit tough I guess 60s or 70s stuff would be fine too as I could make it a bit"throughout her years" type of hamper... have already got a tin of Spam

Piccalilli?

This might help.

also, coronation chicken was named for Elizabeth's coronation. Could you add a pot in or do the items need to be non-perishable?

You can get vintage 50's picnic hampers on ebay with china cups etc, really pretty. You could fill it and take her for an Autumn picnic? Food was still rationed for part of the 50's , so things were pretty basic, but you could look for products that still have their old packaging. Stupid Bendick's changed the lovely decades old packaging of their Bittermints a couple of years ago, but there are funny things like Camp Coffee, and Carnation Milk (yum together btw!) that your Mum will remember from the 50's. A Victoria sponge is very 50's, and seed cake (made with caraway seeds, its like a madeira) Small crustless sandwiches. Pies, that sort of thing. Anywthing the famous Five mention! Biscuits in tins,so you could re-fill a vintage biscuit tin, toffee tin and/or chocolate tin.

Hard boiled eggs
Tomatoes
Chicken sandwiches
Ham sandwiches
Tinned sardines
Shortbread
Fruit cake
And lashings of ginger beer!

Wasn't the famous 5 set in the 50's? If so lashings of ginger beer would be essential
