Would you like to help us test recipes for the Mumsnet Cookbook?

Shhh .. don't tell everyone but we're working on a top secret new project in the form of The Mumsnet Cookbook and we need your help.

We'd like to get together a Mumsnet Cookbook cookery group to stop us from piling on the pounds help us test these shortlisted recipes.

Each volunteer will be allocated a recipe which they'll then cook for their family and give us some feedback on how easy, hard, good, bad, expensive etc they are and whether they'd make it again. All the recipes chosen were submitted over the years by Mumsnetters, so there shouldn't be any outlandish Shock or particularly difficult to source ingredients - and they should all be pretty easy to make (we hope!).

As a thank-you, we'll be putting everyone who helps out into a prize draw to win a Bloomsbury cookbook.

And if that's not enough of an incentive, everyone who helps will have their *Mumsnetter nickname featured in the cookbook's acknowledgements.

I mentioned the yoghurt pud to my Mum this evening and she said my Grandma used to make similar all the time when Mum was a child... So it sounds like quite a reliable recipe, just change the name!! Grin

UnChartered · 07/10/2012 20:48

I got sweetcorn soup (veggie version) which was surprisingly easy and quick to make and tasted quite nice.

Catsmamma · 07/10/2012 21:01

i did hope that yoghurt pudding would be nice, but i just couldn't bear the thought of it!

I will complete the surveys tomorow and send pics.

The soup was also lovely but serious issues with the timing .....but I am a fuss arse about onions and no way is 2 minutes enough to sweat them properly. Otherwise very well received with the universal comment that a bit of bacon would have made it perfection!

Bumpstart · 07/10/2012 21:13

Is there a time limit on this? I need to get to a butcher in order to do the slow cooker roast pork.

I should be able to go after work on Tuesday, do recipe on weds.

Will that be ok?

BetterTogether · 07/10/2012 21:18

This is the recipe as you will see, there is no pot size... I used a 500g pot of yoghurt and ended up having to bake it in 2 dishes, and when i realised how much batter I'd made I upped the eggs to 3. My Grandma's recipe is more or less the same, but apparently it was meant to be an individual size yogurt pot, whoops! Blush luckily everyone likes it as there are a lot of leftovers!!!

zipzap · 07/10/2012 23:22

I swapped with Frootshoots - so did the Tartiflette.

I'm sure that it was a whole lot less hassle than doing the ice cream extravaganza but even when cooked for a lot longer than specified, it still ended up tasting of raw potatoes (even when some of them were definitely cooked through). And despite being not particularly difficult it was just time consuming to cook (and I'm a reasonable cook, can chop onions and slice potatoes pretty quickly, so wouldn't have thought you could have made it much more quickly).

DH's reaction was 'next time please can we just have mash with cheddar and the onion-lardon-wine mixture on the side'? The DC refused to even try it (although admittedly they are only 7 and 4 so maybe the smell of the wine put them off as they are not big fans of things with booze in)(unlike me as a child!).

I agree with dh - it was a very expensive way to try to tart up dauphinoise potatoes and we would have enjoyed mash much more!

sorry to be negative about another of the recipe choices!

Will put some pictures up on my profile on Monday.

Thanks to mumsnet I've made corned beef hash for the first time ever. I didn't like it (but hate corned beef so not surprised about that), the DH enjoyed it and ate mine too. Usually enjoy taking part in MN trials but I was a bit Hmm when I saw my recipe. Thanks, I think!

Elkieb · 08/10/2012 08:56

Catherine mumsnet- where's the official feedback form? I can't find it (sorry)

Frontpaw · 08/10/2012 09:32

Catherine - can I add my own recipe for cake (what else ??). My recipes actually work and don't look like great dane poo.

Hi we made the slow roasted beef brisket. Again it wouldn't have been a meal I would have chosen to cook but we very much enjoyed it. Couldn't find a 4lb brisket joint though so ours was more like a 3 lb one....

It was very simple to prepare, although did have to use a bit of poetic license on ingredients as we couldn't find any fresh beef stock in our hypermarket sized, local supermarket (so used onion gravy instead which I actually think gave it added flavour) and we used fresh rosemary from our garden rather than thyme. Also added a 'glug' of red wine which added something!

The good thing is that there's plenty left for another meal tonight and sandwiches for me.

Merrylegs - sorry about that, if you'd said hatred of mince, we'd have accommodated your preference!

And apologies everyone about not being able to edit your feedback. Am trying to find out if that's doable once you've submitted your form.

We've had around 60% feedback so far, so it would be very useful if you have had a recipe to test if we could have your feedback in by tomorrow please.

And on a related note, am delighted that BetterTogether who tested the yoghurt pudding actually really liked it

Elkieb - when we emailed you your recipe, you had a link to the feedback form in that email. Let me know if you can't find it.

Leoniedesaintvivre - once we have all the feedback in this week, we'll do a draw for the 20 cookbooks we're giving away. I'll post the winners' names on this thread and email them all individually too.

Zipzap - any chance you could email me the pictures as well as putting them on your profile?

Bumpstart - we really need recipes in this week. I can push it to Wednesday at the latest.

CatherineHMumsnet - sorry but I didn't realise the deadline for the reviews was so short - it didn't give a deadline in the email you sent. I'm at work today and tomorrow so I won't be able to get back to you by Wednesday, sorry.

Hopefully everyone else has managed to get theirs done!

CatherineHMumsnet · 08/10/2012 10:25

BarmeeMarmee - yes that's my bad. When could you do the recipe by do you think?

OP posts:
CatherineHMumsnet · 08/10/2012 10:26

I'm not sure if I've done this correctly - but you should be able to edit your feedback form. If you can't, let me know.

And for anyone with more than one recipe to review, you should now be able to submit a further feedback form.

Asmywhimsytakesme well no matter what size pot you use, you measure the flour, sugar & oil in that pot anyway so its only the eggs and the size dish needed that really change.

I used 500g pot of natural bio yoghurt then used that pot for the above ingredients, zest of 1.5 lemons and 3 medium eggs. Mine made a 2 pint pie dish plus 9x9 square baking dish. The square one is what we ate last night and was a light sponge cake, but the pie dish (which is deeper) seems to be more puddingy - there is a big gap of air below the crispy top and the pudding below, whoops.

Next time I think I will keep the same measurements but bake in 2 square baking dishes as I prefer it cake like and it makes it more portable to use for packed lunches. You could try it with a smaller yoghurt pot to check you'll like it first though, my Grandma's recipe used a ski yoghurt as the starting point for all the measurements and baked in 8 or 9 inch square tin. Her recipe calls it Yoghurt Cake though, sounds much nicer! Wink

Frontpaw · 08/10/2012 10:48

Catherine - I am sulking that I only got one recipe and it was duff.
