Cheapish meals that can be frozen

I go back to work next week and could do with batch cooking meals for when me and the DCs get in but apart from bolognese I am clueless as to what I can and can't freeze.
No allergies, DS (3) doesnt really like food in sauce but he's getting better at trying it and DD (2) will eat anything!

any ideas?

Most curries are actually improved by freezing and reheating. Tandoori chicken? Lasagne? Spag Bol? Meat loaf? Pasta sauce but not pasta. Onions, cooked, cooled and frozen in batches. Much quicker when cooking. Stuff chicken with pesto and breadcrumbs or cheese, wrap in bacon then freeze.

Not frozen but pizza bases, passata or pasta sauce, peppers, salami etc. Mozarella freezes.

Cottage pie, shepherds pie, casseroles.

When we were both working f/t and DS was a baby, we survived on fresh pasta and sauces / shoving stuff in the slow cooker in the morning so it was ready for the evening and bulk cooking at weekends for the freezer.

Good luck, it is fine once you get into the swing of things.

I think pretty much anything can be frozen, can't it? Cheap meals are corned beef hash, corned beef pie, sausage stew, chunky soups, tuna kedgeree, meatballs (home made), faggots, bean chilli, macaroni cheese and sausage. All of those, with the exception of the kedgeree, can be frozen.

Fish pie- bung any raw fish, prawns, boiled egg, still frozen peas etc in a dish. Top with creme fraiche and then mashed potato. It's the world's easiest and tastiest fish pie.

Yep, most things can be frozen. I have froze cooked fish pie with boiled eggs in it and its been perfect (make sure to re-heat very very slow and gentle).

cheap cuts include: lamb shoulder, neck, chicken thighs, casserole/brisket beef, shoulder & belly pork. Fish prices vary but fish pie using special deals,

it is possible to freeze most stuff but it doesn't all defrost well. Pasta goes a bit gluey, fruit goes mushy.

I freeze kedgeree without the eggs, just add them when reheating.

If we have a joint I freeze the meat in gravy , always have a tin foil tray in the freezer with roasties in - can serve up a quick "Sunday" roast quickly.

i like mashed potato but it rends to thaw watery. Is there a trick?

notapizzaeater · 30/08/2012 21:27

When I reheat mash, I add an extra knob of butter and stir well just before I serve it.
