Can anyone tell me what frozen veg is worth getting, and what doesn't do so well?

Peas and sweetcorn - yum

Broccoli and cauliflower - yuck

MidWeekSlump · 28/08/2012 20:00

Peas are very handy as is corn on the cob (for last minute BBQ - ing)
I also use chopped frozen spinach - I add it to every mince dish as my children assume it is mixed herbs and eat it.

Yep, have peas, sweetcorn and spinach.

Frozen brocolli and cauliflower isn't good, and yet oddly Aldi frozen cauliflower cheese is lush Grin

Sainsburys do really nice frozen roast veg.
Green beans, broad beans and baby corn are ok too.
Frozen peppers are grim.

roundynotsquary · 28/08/2012 22:12

Spinach good on other dishes but not to make spinach as a side veg.

Peas are great.

Not impressed with peppers.

vodkaanddietirnbru · 28/08/2012 22:14

corn on the cob and petit pois are good. Dh also freezes fresh chillis

shrimponastick · 28/08/2012 22:15

Frozen peppers are good though if you are making a curry or stew type dish.

Baby corn are rank. Also broccoli and cauliflower.

Frozen mushy peas are surprisingly delicious.

I bought a pack of frozen okra the other day - to be used in a curry.

mrspink27 · 28/08/2012 22:30

Soya beans, peas, french beans, sweetcorn and corn on cob all good. Also frozen spinach for adding to other dishes. I also batch chop and freeze onions and courgette.

ShoeJunkie · 30/08/2012 09:17

People have also recommended the frozen chillies and herbs to me though I haven't tried them.

Keepthechangeyoufilthyanimal · 30/08/2012 09:56

Peas are the only thing I buy frozen.
Garden or mushy are good.
My grandma buys everything frozen - but I think this is more due to the fact she can take what she needs from the bag and there's no wastage compared to buying fresh.
However her and my grandad eat very little and have very bland food.

Frozen Cauliflower is awful! So mushy!

Birdiegirl · 30/08/2012 12:58

I like frozen cauliflower and broccoli but I steam it instead of boiling.

RaspberryLemonPavlova · 02/09/2012 18:08

We use a lot of frozen veg.

Agree with Birdie girl, frozen cauliflower and broccoli are fine steamed. So are green beans and baby sweetcorn.

I buy frozen herbs (parsley, basil and coriander), garlic, chilli and ginger.

DD prefers frozen sweetcorn to tinned.

We like mixed veg bags for a quick vegetable.

Frozen peppers are fine for casseroles.

I have recently started using frozen leeks for soup too.

BIWI · 02/09/2012 18:12

Frozen whole leaf spinach is amazingly good. Defrost, drain then heat with some butter and finely chopped garlic. Beautiful Grin

BlingLoving · 02/09/2012 18:16

Frozen carrots .... But you can't get them by themselves in uk. In south Africa it's practically your default carrot option.

We do peas, corn and spinach. Also buy packets of mixed veg in individual packets for micro waving.

valiumredhead · 04/09/2012 15:15

Peas, sweetcorn,spinach,broccoli,mixed for casseroles,cauliflower.

EdwardorEricCantDecide · 04/09/2012 15:21

Frozen garlic/chilli/ginger cubes are great! As are the frozen herbs.
Veg wise I like peas, sweet corn (on the cob and loose) baby carrots, spinach I don't mind frozen peppers but you need to add them to the pot less than 5 mins before serving or they turn to mush! I also dot mind frozen mushrooms for bolognese/fajitas etc but with steak you need fresh mushrooms!

EdwardorEricCantDecide · 04/09/2012 15:22

blinglovin tesco sell frozen baby carrots which are good and frozen sliced carrots which are not so great!

nickelcognito · 04/09/2012 15:22

we do a lot of frozen broccoli and cauliflower.

sweetcorn, def
green beans,
peppers

TitsalinaBumSquash · 04/09/2012 15:25

I keep a lot of frozen veg in, for days like today when I'm either short of money and using up as much as I can in the house before shopping, or when I'm feeling a bit crap and cba to peel/chop etc.

Anyway they're all good except carrots I find. Broccoli and Cauliflower can go mushy if slightly over cooked.
Peas are the best though :)
