defrosted smoked salmon

tomatoface · 23/08/2012 15:32

has been in freezer for ages, use by 8th April, and on the back it says freeze & use within 1 month, so in effect it is over 4 months 'out of date'. Is this just a guideline for the best quality or is it to do with safeness to eat?
thanks
(and sorry if this has been asked a million times before)

I wasn't going to cook it just eat as is

Is it still sealed in its original packaging? If so, it's probably OK.

NettOlympicSuperstar · 23/08/2012 16:12

I'd use it.

moomoo1967 · 23/08/2012 16:29

I would still eat it

tomatoface · 23/08/2012 16:42

yes sealed in original packaging. Will test it on the kids Grin

Salted foods don't freeze quite as well for quite as long as other foods. Bacon's another one that you're supposed to eat fairly quickly. But a few extra months is not like it saw in the millennium

PenisVanLesbian · 23/08/2012 16:47

it wouldbe safe in 10 years as long as it has never been defrosted.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 23/08/2012 16:50

Not necessarily PVL... the salt content makes a difference to the temperature and the foodstuff will deteriorate faster than an unsalted equivalent

tomatoface · 23/08/2012 16:53

I never knew that about salted food, better eat all the bacon in the freezer pronto!
