Carousel birthday cake from Australian woman's weekly - help!!!!!!

Have promised DD this cake for her 5th birthday party but can't find anything resembling the fruit sticks that they use to decorate it. Does anyone know where I could get them or could possibly suggest alternatives? Thanks in advance - am starting to panick lol!!!!! x

I used some american twist sweets I got in a little shop in Bluewater but they tasted vile. Actually think you'd do better to make twists out of molding icing in different colours.

On a separate note it was the bloody hardest cake I've ever made (and I've made a lot!). You need to think hard about the support of that top tier as getting the thing level and supported was a nightmare. I managed it for long enough to take a photo and then I had to reconstruct it without the horses poles to travel it to the party - so it then defeated the object as it no longer looked like a carousel!

In hindsight I would have used a completely solid (so wood or something not cardboard) board and central pole and base - so one thing, put bottom cake on by cutting in half before icing, then top layer...

Oh crikey - am starting to think I may have bitten off more than I can chew on this one!! Icing twists are a great idea thank you - may have to consider some sort of light false top. Thanks for advice - wish me luck lol!!!! x

actually I think that's a brilliant idea - make a false top. And have the bottom thicker than they suggest - so maybe 2 layers of vic sponge sandwiched and that gives more of a base to hole up all the poles...

it did look fab for the time it lasted but there was no way I was going to be able to transport it on a car journey!
