I'd say the latter.

It's shocking how many children leave home without even knowing the basics. That's why we are a nation of fast-food-fatties.

Not sure you're allowed to self-promote like that on MN, though....

I agree its really shocking. You would think with Jamie Oliver etc on the telly promoting this stuff that parents would make the time to teach the basics.

I think one of the biggest issues is time - it is IMPOSSIBLE to cook with children without making mess and it inevitably takes longer than doing it yourself. I remember my mum kicking us out of the kitchen when she was making dinner - sadly knackered parents after a long day just don't have the patience.
