Ok so it's not exactly going to win awards for healthy day of the year but I genuinely don't think what they've eaten today is too bad.

Two Weetabix with raisins (and sugar)
Slice toast with marmite
Strawberry and banana smoothie

Lunch spaghetti bolognese which had mushrooms peppers onions, tomatoes in it as well as beef mince and some lentils and herbs
Muller fruit corner for pudding
Water to Drink

Large lemon curd cupcake at movie time (plus a lick of the bowl each)

Ham roll with crisps and grapes, another lemon cupcake and a glass of milk

It's not that bad is it?

Can't believe how many agree that menu was good and yet would no doubt slate someone whose kids had a happy meal with water to drink. You've got to laugh at the double standards. That menu is loaded with sugar. Fairy cakes and lemon curd thats more sugar than a can of coke and then there's the muller fruit corners I wont ask what ham but I guess it was processed yorkshire packet stuff. You realise that sees about as much of a pig as a turkey twizzler used to see a turkey. If you cooked your own ham and kept it in the freezer than ignore the last two sentences.

Where is the supper after the afternoon tea?

Virgil · 06/08/2012 20:09

Novak why on earth would you guess at the type of ham and then liken it to turkey twizzlers? Why the vitriol?

Bloody Nora. Love to see your menu novack.

TantrumsAndOlympicGoldBalloons · 06/08/2012 20:09

big that's what I was saying.

One day of eating cake is not a crime. As long as its not cake, cake cake everyday then I think a treat is a good thing every now and then.

I hate food being bad

Treats in moderation, balance of fruit, veg, carbs, protein and plenty of fresh air and activity sounds better than sugar/ham/whatever is bad and should not be eaten.

And I'm typing this eating chocolate brownies my dd baked and chocolate ice cream Blush

But we went to the gym after work, and we will be taking the dog for a walk at 9pm so I think it's ok

Aboutlastnight · 06/08/2012 20:09

Oh FGS

Ir's one day. I am sure the kids won't turn into frogs.

Op don't stress - look st what they consume over a week rather than a day.
Mine have just been eating fried square sausage and chips at granny's house. Should I deregister?

AdoraBell · 06/08/2012 20:10

Re ham being bad, I read something on the Beeb about scientist saying ham & bacon are such a high risk food for colon cancer they should be immediately cut from people's diets like that's ever going to happen

Forgot to say what mine have had today (we're not on school hols)

Breakfast-Diluted raspberry juice for DD1, same drink for DD2 with muesli and yoghurt, OH had natural yoghurt with banana walnuts and raisins, fruit juice and tea. I had tea, coffee, toast and more coffee.

Lunch- DDs took pasta, chicken and tomatoe salad (homemade) fruit purée, an apple, water and half a packet of Doritos to school. I've had more coffee, gummy bears and crisps, not normal for me, OH I have no idea what he'll eat at work.

Dinner- no idea yet but it'll be home made and hot.

I often cook twice a day, sometimes thrice on a weekend but not very often. I'm not overly keen on sandwiches, but that's just me.

Virgil · 06/08/2012 20:11

And I'll have you know the ham was wrapped in waxy papery stuff thank you very much from the v posh deli in the village.

And my lemon curd cupcakes are fab and i made my own lemon curd AND a lemon curd cupcake is better for a child than coke so where has that one come from?

OP posts:
bigkidsdidit · 06/08/2012 20:12

Tantrums I think we agree

I was confused - I thought th OP was implying this was a pretty normal day, which would be pretty bad IMO

As a once off - well, it's ok I spose!

Littleplasticpeople · 06/08/2012 20:12

Is supper compulsory? Mine rarely have anything more than milk once dinner/tea is done.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 06/08/2012 20:13

Don't forget the devils sputum fruit corner Virgil you feeder you!

Aboutlastnight · 06/08/2012 20:13

I would love a lemon curd cupcake...one question though, why are you wasting them on your children? Grin

clemetteattlee · 06/08/2012 20:13

Mine have tea at 6, bed at 7. Where am I supposed to fit supper in?? Confused

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 06/08/2012 20:14

They have had plenty of food they don't need supper.

FellatioNelson · 06/08/2012 20:14

I don't think that sounds too bad at all. It's not text book perfect but I've seen far, far worse. And whose children eat textbook perfect food anyway? Honestly? It looks reasonably balanced to me, with a good representation of f fruit and veg, some decent protein, some wholegrains, fibre, vitamin B, potassium, no excessive junk.

Worry not. It's fine. Other people might say they serve up better, but whether their children actually eat it is another matter.

MonsPubis · 06/08/2012 20:16

DD - 17 nothing all day. then Jacket with tuna
ds 16 - 3 cakes from the bakery
chilli and rice
ds 12 - a boost choc bar
one carrot
chilli and rice

OP - your dh would hate me!!

Glittertwins · 06/08/2012 20:16

It doesn't look that bad especially with the extra veg in the spag bol. We don't have sugar on cereal and I probably wouldn't have given ours 2 cupcakes in one afternoon but our two are only 4. If yours are older then that is different.

This is what they have had today:
Breakfast:1.5 weetabix and raisins, milk and multi bit tablet
Mid morning: penguin biscuit from party bag and water
Lunch: Lamb curry, sag bhaji (all made from scratch) and rice, ambrosia custard pot
Mid afternoon: piece of chocolate after swimming lesson
Tea: Beans on toast and fruit.

Vagaceratops · 06/08/2012 20:17

I think its fine - but then I am quite lax with my DC's diet.

I always thought people easting two meals a day was a myth, obviously not.

mumblecrumble · 06/08/2012 20:17

I think it sounds like a fairly balanced day. More importantly sits well in a HEALTHY WEEK which is what I;'ve always been taught is the aim. Not in one day and certainly not in just one meal.

Kids' needs are so different from ours. I am over weight and trying to lose weight, DH is a healthy, tall, working man so needds calories and DD aged 4 is a healthy, tall, highly active kid who needs a healthy amount of grub!

In our house we value fruit and veg for good fibre and vitamins etc, protein, carbs and yes, some fat. treats on the summer holiday are good.

We've eaten a ridiculous amount (hmmm.... 2 each...maybe not THAT silly) of ice lollies today. But they are either the homemade out of squished fruits or supermarket fruit juice. Too much sugar maybe? But its hot, and we are on 'home holiday' this week as me and DH are off.

Disagree that fairy cakes have more sugar than coke.

Vagaceratops · 06/08/2012 20:17

By meal I mean cooked dinner.

TantrumsAndOlympicGoldBalloons · 06/08/2012 20:19

I love fruit corners, so do the DCs. And ham. And DS had an egg and bacon sandwhich for breakfast this morning. I was just pleased she washed up afterwards!

But it's the holidays. School days they have porridge and fruit for breakfast and a fruit smoothie make with natural yoghurt.

So it's a holiday, they eat more junk than normal. But either me, DH, dd or ds1 cook a dinner from scratch every night, there's always a choice of salad or veg, and we generally only have pudding at the weekends.

We are pretty active, the DCs are athletic and sporty so I reckon it's ok.

They don't think any food is bad, they each cook once a week and they choose what to cook. It is always a healthy balance, dd made salmon fillets, cous cous with roasted veg and a huge salad tonight. then we ate brownies and ice cream

FrameyMcFrame · 06/08/2012 20:21

my kids had...

boiled egg, brown toast, banana and juice for brekkie

Fish and chips and juice plus small ice cream at the beach for lunch

Home made cupcakes and smoothie for snack

Tuna and anchovies spaghetti, tomato cucumber carrot sticks, beetroot and fruit yoghurts for tea.

They will have something else before bed too.

A lot of fish today!

Northernlurker · 06/08/2012 20:22

Dh was horrified to discover that red grape juice had more sugar per ml than my coke. Our bodies need carbs and fat and sugar and salt and protein. They probably don't need as much as we choose to put in them.

However, teaching your children to obsess about food and their diet and then by inference their physical shape IS setting them up for serious mental health problems. Food is far too much of an issue for us. Best parenting advice I ever read was 'keep your issues with food away from your kids'

You can feed your children wild rocket and home grown apricots all you like. It does not make you a more loving parent than somebody who can find their way down the cake aisle in Sainsburys blindfolded.

Virgil · 06/08/2012 20:23

We don't do supper. The DSs are small and so go to bed at seven. They have dinner at about half five. Does everyone else do supper too?

OP posts:
bythemoonlight · 06/08/2012 20:25

Dd1 (4yo) knows having 2 ice lollies in one day is a lot of sugar and unhealthy (doesn't stop her wanting 2 though!)

I don't think I'm making food an issue for her, but I am teaching her what is healthy /unhealthy.

She knew that her dad having two burgers at dinner the other night was unhealthy.

Is that wrong?

NovackNGood · 06/08/2012 20:26

Because that processed yorkshire ham that is so common in the UK is just rubbish ground up pig with added stabilisers, conserving agents, salt and the some and of course don't forget the added aromas and flavourings, lest you taste the chlorine used to ensure the bacteria from the pigshit is killed before it all gets re-form to look like a lump of meat.

If you want ham buy a ham from your butcher and cook it with honey or some cloves and then slice it up nice and thin as you need it or take one thicker slice and chop it for pizza topping or for baked potato filling. You'll get the lots of nice dishes at the same price as a few packets of processed but far better tasting and far healthier and it will go further too.

And if you knew how turkey twizzlers were made you'd realise how not much different is the method of processing ham

Oh and if it just honey roast flavour without the ed to make flavoured then that ham has seen no honey or doubntfully actually been roasted in it's life (or death).
