So DH has just told me that the DCs diet today has been rubbish. I disagree what do you think?

Ok so it's not exactly going to win awards for healthy day of the year but I genuinely don't think what they've eaten today is too bad.

Two Weetabix with raisins (and sugar)
Slice toast with marmite
Strawberry and banana smoothie

Lunch spaghetti bolognese which had mushrooms peppers onions, tomatoes in it as well as beef mince and some lentils and herbs
Muller fruit corner for pudding
Water to Drink

Large lemon curd cupcake at movie time (plus a lick of the bowl each)

Ham roll with crisps and grapes, another lemon cupcake and a glass of milk

It's not that bad is it?

Sounds like he is cranky cos hes on a diet !
Tell him you understand -poor thing etc and pass him some lettuce leaves Grin

AdoraBell · 06/08/2012 19:42

Looks fine to me, if my OH said that I'd promote him to Executive In Charge Of Feeding DC's A Proper Diet Every Fecking Day Until They Move Out.

DilysPrice · 06/08/2012 19:43

Ham/bacon/salami/chorizo day in day out is according to latest research significantly carcinogenic (and bowel cancer in particular, so one of the big four). Every now and then the effect is insignificant but processed pork in pack lunches every day would not be advisable. I've never seen any research dividing this up into naice vs plastic ham though, we clearly need a MN Research Institute investigation into this.

peeriebear · 06/08/2012 19:43

It looks like a good day's eating to me. (Currently 36wks pg, summer hols, sick of thinking of food ideas for DDs, completely lost appetite myself)
today the DDs (10 and 5) have had:
Coco pops
Tomato sandwich (dd2) re-heated fishfingers and oven chips with ketchup (dd1's tea she missed from last night, she asked for it!)
Chocolate yogurt, strawberries, grapes, apples
Crackers and butter
They are shortly going to have chips from the chip shop. This is my bothered face :)

Virgil · 06/08/2012 19:45

It was definitely naice ham - German brunswick smoked ham, that falls into the naice ham category doesn't it? Blush

2 cupcakes and one packet crisps in one day is not that bad! They had plenty of fruit & veg too.

workshy · 06/08/2012 19:48

mine have had

breakfast -piesce of wholemeal bread with nutella and a banana
snack -trifle sponge
lunch- greggs sausage roll! (so shoot me)
snack -grapes
dinner -pasta with homemade tomato & red pepper sauce + cheese
snack -strawberries mixed with yoghurt

both mine are grazers so having stuff to graze on is hard work -keeping them off the crumpets!

Ragwort · 06/08/2012 19:49

Actually I think that does sound a pretty healthy diet for active children, I've fed my DS far worse for the last 11 years and he is an incredibly fit and healthy child - never gets 'bugs' or has time off school, plays sport at a high level and eats much worse than that Grin. Probably helps that he just doesn't have a sweet tooth though - but eats lots of ham, bacon, carbohydrates and not much fruit and veg.

Northernlurker · 06/08/2012 19:49

According to my mama smoked ham is next only to radiation in the cancer causing stakes. She does get her info from the Daily Mail though...

I think this thread shows a classic mistake we make in this country. Everybody gets agitated about sugar - though bodies need energy and fat - ditto. But there's relatively little concern expressed about the salt content. I'm sure I eat too much salt but generally it is something I try to be aware of for the dcs.

Meglet · 06/08/2012 19:52

Looks normal to me. Just as long as the ham was nice ham.

Although I don't put sugar on the DC's cereal.

FamiliesShareGerms · 06/08/2012 19:52

Virgil - do you mean Brunswick, £1 on offer at Sainsburys ham? In which case it's pretending to be naice, but not actually!

clemetteattlee · 06/08/2012 19:53

I might eat two cupcakes and a packet of crisps this evenin while watching fit people winning medals...

Meglet · 06/08/2012 19:55

FWIW the only ham I count as nice is the Sainsburys organic, £3 for 3 slices . We only eat it once a month as it's so expensive and I have ex-veggie guilt.

Littleplasticpeople · 06/08/2012 19:56

Sounds fine to me, sugar is ok as part of a balanced diet.

Mine certainly don't get 2 cooked meals a day (unless they have a boiled egg for breakfast if that counts!), a sandwich for one meal is surely perfectly normal Confused

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 06/08/2012 19:57

I'm sniggering at the beige food - DS1 did this for 2 years - baked potato, white cheese, plain pasta, bananas. I remember going to the Doctors, wringing my hands and saying "he's eaten nothing except for Quavers all day!".Doctor told me that Quavers were the cornerstone of a healthy and balanced diet Grin

TantrumsAndOlympicGoldBalloons · 06/08/2012 19:58

There is a whole enormous list of things we shouldn't eat. It gets longer every day.

Obviously frying bacon every day for a toddler is not the best idea in the world. But to put foods into good and bad at a young age is not a good thing to do. It causes negative associations with food.

2 cakes and a packet of crisps one day along side veg, fruit, protein and carbs is not exactly the crime of the century.

It's not just about food either, being healthy is about a healthy attitude to food, a varied diet and being active IMHO.

QuintessentialShadows · 06/08/2012 19:58

I agree with your husband, aside from the spagbol, you have filled your children with crap.

Weetabix with raisins (which are literal sugar bombs) and sugar???

Were the rolls white or brown bread?

Crisps, a couple of cupcakes, and a smoothie?
Muller fruit corner? You could hardly find a more sugary yoghurt if you tried? (aside from frubes and petit filous, etc)

You fattening them up for the new term?

bythemoonlight · 06/08/2012 19:58

Mine have had:

Shreddies for breakfast followed by banana

A pear and an ice lolly mid morning (it's the holidays!)

houmous sandwich, some cherry toms, blueberries and slice of homemade banana cake.

Dinner at their dads: fishfingers, new potatoes and mixed veg. Pudding was a satsuma I think.

Does that sound like a lot of sugar? It does, doesn't it?

ChickensArentEligableForGold · 06/08/2012 19:59

It sounds fine to me. My two have just randomly eaten their way through the fridge and fruit bowl. Seriously, they're locusts

Virgil · 06/08/2012 20:01

Families - no it was from the deli in the village (but now that I know sainsburys do it or a version of it for £1 a packet I'm making a special trip there tomorrow !!!) Grin

OP posts:
bigkidsdidit · 06/08/2012 20:02

But Tantrums surely it is necessary to distinguish between always food and sometimes food (or something like that)

A balanced diet does not mean equal amounts of fruit and cake!

That is why we are so fat in Britain, in my opinion

But I hate these threads - all the competitive 'god, you should see the crap my kids eat' as if it's something to be proud of

SkiBumMum · 06/08/2012 20:02

Mine 11m and 3.5 had

B: readybrek (baby's with Ella's Purple One dd1 with honey), blueberries, toast & marmite

S am: DD1 had some mini Cadbury's animals; DD2 had a baby flapjack bar thingy

L: beans & scrambled egg on toast, Petit Filous, banana

S pm: ricecakes, apple

T: tuna pasta in cheese sauce, sweetcorn & brocolli, yogurt

Supper: multigrain Shapes cereal & milk

Exercise: DD1 swimming lesson & lots of trampolining.

Not too bad a day DM was visiting & disapproves of biscuity snacks between meals

akaemmafrost · 06/08/2012 20:03

No reason for sugar on cereal.

I think it general it sounds ok but A LOT!

Grin at "fattening up for the new term".

My kids had cereal and orange juice for breakfast.

Banana for mid morning snack.

French bread cheese and ham, cucumber, satsumas and apple juice for lunch

Chicken fingers, chips and peas for dinner, with ice cream and a milky way respectively for pudding.

That's actually a pretty good day for them.

droves · 06/08/2012 20:04

Its not that bad ..

Yesterday dd4 ate. Cookie crisp cereal with full fat milk
3 oranges
4 packets of crisps , ( 2 watsits,2plain)

A cheese toastie

Drinks of milk , water and blackcurrant squash

3 orea cookies
Packet of tic tacks

Tinned macaroni and toast ( with butter) ..

She ate rubbish .

However her twin ate

Weetabix with milk

Toast with butter

Salad and ham sandwich

An oreo cookie

Drinks of milk and water

A probiotic yogurt drink

Apple , banana , orange , grapes

A random tomato

A random raw carrot

Tinned macaroni . ( slightly less rubbish ) .

Ds4 isn't usually too bad , as long as you keep him away from chocolate spread sandwiches .
