Quick, urgent question re salmon

Have just opened a pack of salmon, use by today's date. It smelled really bad when I opened it, but the smell soon faded. Is it ok to eat? I had the same thing with chicken last week and I used it and we survived, but I'm not so sure about fish...!

If something smells bad I tend to avoid but maybe that's me being over cautious!

My acid test: if it smells bad when cooking then you know it's gone. This has happened to me a couple of times then I've binned it. Otherwise I cook it very, very hot an thoroughly. I wouldn't microwave. Fry it!

No bad smell when cooking - and I've cooked it in the oven so it's had some proper heat going through it!

I always used to be really cautious about this kind of thing, but have relaxed a bit lately - I want to stop throwing stuff out unnecessarily!

I'd make sure it was well cooked rather than "pink in the middle" and mask it with lots of herbs/flavours Grin

Well, we've eaten it...so far so good Grin.

Thanks for all the advice..

You aren't pregnant are you? Sudden acute sense of smell...

tkband3 · 11/07/2012 06:45

Oh lord, don't say that Penelope. I have been feeling rough the last few days - dodgy tummy most of the time and v v tired. No nausea though....
