Does royal icing go with chocolate sponge?

I know that royal icing normally adorn smadiera cake but I just want a classic chocolate sponge. It is for my dds birthday cake and I was thinking of using royal icing rather than chocolate butter icing as I want to colour it and decortae it. I may well use chocolate butter icing instead.

Also any ideas for birthday themes for a 4 year old girl would be gratefully recieved. She is very girly so I am thinking butterflies/ballerinas etc.

I'd do a plain buttericing, and colour it rather than royal icing, but I like butter icing!

What about doing something like this but using a normal cake mix rather than the packet mix? I've got boys, but always loved the ballerina cake

I do Jamie Oliver's celebration cake but with butter icing filling and topping.... It's gorgeous

Hi there. Thanks for the ifdeas. I will probably do butter icing or white chocolate frosting which I can colour. Pink icing against brown appeals to me. Many thanks!
