I'm thinking mixed slaw salad or potato salad with lemon, capers & anchovies.

But I need a few more ideas as I need to take 5 dishes with me.

Why do you need to take 5 dishes ? Confused
I would generally ask the host, to find out if they want puddings / meat / salad / bread / etc., etc. No point in everyone turning up with the same stuff.

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 17/06/2012 20:30

I have taken jambalayas, quiches, cakes, crumbles, curries, bread and cheeses, soups, fruits salads, fresh fruits, salads..
... that is an acquired taste (probably lots of left overs)
I agree why 5 dishes if you are not hosting?

chocolateshoes · 17/06/2012 20:33

I often take tapenade, and also Hugh F-W's Cambodian wedding dip. Delia's roast tomato salad is another good one.

It's a big family do and I'm taking on my nan & grandads share as I don't want them to have to bring anything and I've offered to bring aunties as well as she is also knocking on a bit now as well Grin

Not into the pots and capers le? It is on the tesco recipes site and looked easy.

Meat and pudding is being seen to by others so I'm on sides and picky bits etc.

I need recipes, I'm not very good at this am I?

definitely don't do a couscous salad! made that for our jubilee street party and wasn't eaten at all... it is very lovely though, but an acquired taste apparently...

PissyDust · 17/06/2012 20:44

Poor you blue did you keep hovering near it making yum noises to try and tempt some one to try it?

I'm going to have to eat the whole bowl of pots, anchovies & capers arnt I?

I didn't bother to be honest... just took it home and because it been out all day, didn't trust it for the next day so just chucked it all in the bin :(

If you're doing a side dish, why don't you do some pickled veg?
and just a potato salad without the anchovies, my potato salad is usually, potatoes, red onion and parsley, with mayonnaise and seasoning...

Samosa's and onion bhajis?

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 17/06/2012 20:50

1- fresh bread/crakers and cheeses (i.e. nothing to do)
2- Fresh fruits or fruits salad (same)
3- one salad
4- 1 soup, I would go for gazpacho (cold) but I don't live in england so one of these might do instead www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/wordofmouth/2012/jun/14/how-to-cook-perfect-tomato-soup
5 - 1 rice, potato or pasta dishes (can be eaten cold or luke warm), jambalaya might be too meaty if meat already sorted

you can replaced some of these by antipasti (sausages or vegs or both),
houmous and sticks, canapes (i.e spreads on toasts)...

I actually don't know many people (and especially children) who would eat it but if you know that your family will go for it!

PissyDust · 17/06/2012 21:04

Mixed berries sound really easy nice, i will do that.

Sad Blue

Le great ideas there and your dill & sur cream does sound nicer so I will go with that, I eat all sorts of strange food so probably would be the only one to like it Blush

  1. Mixed Berries
2, cheese and biscuits
  1. mixed slaw
  2. potato, dill & sour cream

And I think 5 should be a pasta dish - any ideas?

Thank you so much for all your help Smile

salad?

Jamie oliver recipes are usually very easy to make and tastes good too look at his site if you prefer something warm.

lilolilmanchester · 18/06/2012 16:35

do you know what the main course is going to be? You wouldn't want a pasta salad if it was lasagne - can you find out?

Mintyy · 18/06/2012 16:37

Smoked salmon on brown bread and butter triangles with lemon wedges and parsley.

lisaro · 18/06/2012 16:42

Do you mean coleslaw? If so yes, plain potato salad, bhajees and samosas with a side dip, garlic bread and tuna pasta salad. Most people will eat most of those.

Lots of lovely ideas, lost that is very easy & I also like Mintyy smoked salmon idea as it can be prepared 10 minutes before we leave.

I don't have time to make bhajees & samosa unless they can be frozen and then reheated at host site?

Main course is BBq food, breads, nibbles etc. It's an all day outside do.

Please pray for good weather for us!

Another dead easy one is pasta with red pesto, a jar of those peppers in oil, some pitted olives and a crumbled block of feta. Delicious too!
