Help! Cake been in 7 hrs not cooked!

Im baking an 11 inch round fruit cake and accoding to delia im cooking it on low shelf gas mark 1.

It should have taken around 5.5 hours but its not cooked and its been 7 hours.

Whats best, turn oven up? Move it higher? Just leave it longer?

I cant risk it cracking burning etc as it took me ages to make in a bucket!!!

hmm are you sure it's not cooked? sometimes the fruit can leave a sticky residue on skewer/knife if you stick it in, but as long as it's not raw cake dough it should be ok

Do you have an oven thermometer? Depending how old your oven is it might be that the heat isn't circulating very well. I'd probably turn it up but also rotate it every 15 minutes or so to help even the temperature around. Just a guess mind you!

I typed a response and lost it. Its an old oven in a rented house. I'll turn it up to 2 and check it again in a bit. No thermometer but lesson learned, i need one.

I had this exact problem last week and even started a thread about it too!

I ended up cooking it for 8 hours. After 7 hrs it wasn't cooked so I moved it to top shelf of oven (still at gm1). This did the trick. The cake was eaten at the weekend and was lovely.

I don't know about your oven but mine is gas and the temp varies a lot between top and bottom. Next time I'll cook on middle shelf, as I have done with this recipe previously.

Its ok silver as i'll know for next time. This cake im gonna retry it at my mums as its dd christening cake and too much pressure.

it didnt cook after ten hours. I tipped it out and was raw underneath. So i'm moving... To a new house with double oven Grin
