Is it possible to remove marzipan from a cake?

Hi all,

I made a cake for a christening that's happening in July, at the end of April. I got as far as putting the marzipan on, then ended up in hospital for a month (it wasn't due to my cooking skills, I might add lol).

The problem is that the marzipan has gone a funny colour and texture, and I'd be far happier removing and starting again, but I don't dare start in case I end up with gaping holes in the cake, when I start taking it off.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can remove it as 'safely' as possible?

Thanks in advance

It should just peel off but help it along with a thin bladed filleting knife slid underneath as you go. Like skinning fish...
