I can't afford a proper cake mixer - anyone use a handheld? Would you recommend a particular brand?

Yep, I use a little handheld kenwood. Recently had to replace after about 15 years. iirc change from £20 in Argos. Don't think there is a massive difference between the brands.

I just got a cuisinart one. It's faaaar too powerful. I have to use a huge mixing bowl to stop everything flying out.

Agree that you don't need to spend a lot on one. I'd love one of those big posh stand mixers but can't justify/afford it, so use my cheapo Argos one and it does the job fine. I second a good big mixing bowl, but I prefer plastic as metal or earthenware look lovely but make a hell of a racket when the beaters bang against the sides!
