If i were to make icing with icing sugar and colouring, how long would it be usable before setting? I need to make it in advance, perhaps an hour or two but don't want it to set in the bowl!

Also does it make any difference if its chilled?

The top will set slightly if you don't use it straight away, but if you stir it well just before you need it, it will be fine.

Thanks, how long do you think i can leave it like that?

It'll be fine for a few hours. Are you talking about regular icing sugar/water/colouring or butter icing? Regular icing only takes 5 minutes to make, so you could make it just before you need it. Butter icing can be frozen.

No just normal icing. The problem i have with making it just before is that i always mess it up and make it too runny. You wouldn't think you could get it wrong would you! So because its for a party for the kids to use i don't want to leave it to the last minute when I'll probably be frazzled anyway!

When mixing it, add water by the drop, not the spoonful and you'll be fine. If you want to make it in advance, put it in a small bowl and put clingfilm over it, it'll keep for a good few hours like that
