ChaosTrulyReigns · 24/05/2012 22:20

I'll bet I'm not the only one planing a barbeque this weekend.

Grin

I'd like to shamelessly steal some of your ideas OhCleverAndCreativeMNers.

OP posts:
flipflopper · 25/05/2012 20:54

im not a veggie but these are delicious bbq recipes. You just need to be careful with the cheese that itdoesnt stick.
feta kebabs, the bread makesit really yummy!
stuffed peppers
halloumi kebabs
coleslaw
Ive done all these recipes, and will def be doing them again, everyone commented how nice they were, bit of a change from the usuals.

flipflopper · 25/05/2012 20:55

I think a lot of people put the meat on sooner than they should. You really need to wait until the flames have died down and the coals are white.

Ive been to some awful bbqs where the sausages were burnt on the outside and raw in the middle- nothing worse- yuck!

OhNoMyFanjo · 25/05/2012 20:59

It's was something like 8 burger, 12 sausages, 20 rolls and a bottle of ketchup for a £10, enjoy Grin

SkivingAgain · 25/05/2012 21:03

Asda do some fantastic glazed mackerel on a skewer that are loverly bbq'd. We also like a whole side of salmon in foil with butter and chilli flakes.

ByTheWay1 · 25/05/2012 21:06

I like corn on the cob basted with chilli oil - yummmmmmmm

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 25/05/2012 21:11

I'm not sure my reply will help you much Grin, but it might help one of your guests??

Being vegetarian - a separate BBQ! with corn on the cob, pretty much any veg burger/sausage, garlic mushrooms and/or camembert!

OR bread rolls, salad etc and not having to explain why I don't want a vegetable kebab that has been cooked with all the meat!

Judging by the supermarket this evening the entire county has already shopped for their BBQ, it was like one of those scenes where there's been a natural disaster and there's nothing left on the shelves and people are behaving a little manically!!

Good Luck Out There!

madmomma · 25/05/2012 21:27

klaxon I really like your style there Grin I want to come to one of your bbq's

Guitargirl · 25/05/2012 21:28

Not food related but what I really want at a barbecue is somewhere to sit and eat and not have to try and stand and balance a drink/plate/cutlery. And not on the fricking floor.

homemade lamb burgers with, mixed herbs, egg, breadcrumbs and garlic. sour cream and garlic dip all over your sausages and homemade coleslaw.

helenthemadex · 25/05/2012 21:49

some great ideas here much better than my normal bbq which is a sausage you can write with Grin

mumzy · 25/05/2012 22:26

2 Slices of aubergines with slice of mozzarella cheese or brie in between sprinkle with salt and chili flakesskewer in the middle with cocktail stick brush with olive oil and barbecue. Veggie kebabs: alternate chunks of courgettes, peppers and whole mushrooms on a skewer brush with oil and barbecue.

trixymalixy · 25/05/2012 23:05

"sausage you can write with" I am so going to steal that!!

Thumbwitch · 26/05/2012 01:14

Lean meat of the variety that won't give you food poisoning if it's not cooked properly - beef and lamb, primarily. The leaner the better so it doesn't spit too much fat onto the flames, causing toxins to come back up onto the meat.

Salads - homemade potato salad, usually with enough garlic to fell a Frenchman at 10 paces; mixed salad with grated carrot, grated beetroot, mixed leaves, chopped cucumber (or grated, depending), grated pecorino.
Maybe a rice salad - but I like the old fashioned style ones with a bit of curry flavour and sultanas, spring onions and so on.

Chips'n'dips for picking at while waiting for the cremation barbecue to be ready

If you like chocolate bananas, then you can try this:
Slice a banana carefully from stem to tip, just going through the skin, not into the flesh. Put in several lumps of Cadbury's dairy milk or other chocolate of your choice. Wrap whole in silver foil and cook on barbecue. Banana will go nice and frittery (without the batter) and chocolate will melt into it. Needs a spoon and careful handling (hot banana can hurt)

klaxon · 26/05/2012 07:09

madmomma - thanks. We're having one next Friday. FYI the best thing to serve with waterfelon is midori and lemonade!

duckdodgers · 26/05/2012 08:41

If youve got time to make this after getting all those ingredients for all those Eton messes... Grin

Anyway I do a lovely weightwatchers chicken satay for everyone.

Marinade chopped chicken in 2 tablespoons crunchy peanut butter, 1 crushed garlic clove, 2 tbsp dark soy sauce, 1 tsp dried chilli flakes, 1 tbsp tomato puree and 100ml pineapple juice.

Thread onto skewers and cook, basting with marinade. We have them cold for picnics to.

feelinghappynow · 26/05/2012 08:57

I'm going to have to agree with pinot here...

Despite my love of fabulous salads, different marinated offerings....you just can't beat a (decent homemade) burger with plastic cheese Grin

Homemade lamb burgers with feta in the middle
Half a pepper, filled with a sliced cherry tomato, garlic and goats cheese.

Banana in it's skin, slice lengthways but not right to the ends, fill with chocolate buttons, marshmallows. Wrap in foil, cook for 5-8 mins.

MistyRocks · 26/05/2012 16:11

portobello mushrooms (the massive flat ones) spread with butter and garlic puree and a bit of ground black pepper, wrapped in tinfoil and cooked for about 40 minutes

also, as lots have already said, halloumi. i cube mine and thread it on a skwer along with onion, mushrooms and peppers. douse them in lime juice and chilli and a splash of olive oil. yogurt and mint dip on the side.

paneer would work for that one too.

omg yum i want a bbq now!

sparkle12mar08 · 26/05/2012 16:58

Chicken in sticky ginger marinade, lime & lemongrass salmon, pork & apple sausages, and a decent steak burger, plus some sweetcorn cobs. Lots of big green salads and dips. And the obl;igatory, ever refilled, jug of Pimms!

midori1999 · 26/05/2012 17:08

This thread is making me hungry! We are BBQing tonight, but just us and a spatchcocked chicken with BBQ marinate/sauce.

I make sort of kofta kebab type things with lamb mince, onion, garlic, chilli, coriander and cumin.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 26/05/2012 17:15

Marshmallows sandwiched between two double chocolate chip cookies.

ToxicMoxie · 26/05/2012 21:08

Sweet potatoes wrapped in foil then baked are delicious, and they take a lot less time than regular taters. Portabella mushrooms, baby back ribs, brisket, it's all good. Must also have borracho beans and green chile!

lookout · 26/05/2012 21:43

We've just had minute steak - just s+p and olive oil, a minute each side, perfect; turkey, lemon and thyme kofte kebab; halloumi with lemon juice; green salad with grated carrot; strips of courgette, pepper and aubergine in garlic, s+p, olive oil and herbes de provence; chicken and bacon pasta salad (for the boy); and homemade garlic bread. We had watermelon for pudding but if we EVER have a child-free BBQ I am so doing that thing with the melon and vodka Grin
