Rainbow Cake - colours and bowls

I am going to make this cake!

Just a quick question - on the other thread for a rainbow cake it says six colours and seven bowls are needed. Am I being thick, why seven bowls when only six colours are being used? Is the seventh bowl the tin to cook the cake in?

I think its just a mistake. If you are making 7 layers, you will need 7 colours & bowls. Are you doing layers or tie-dye?

one un-dyed white layer?
icing?
Never had the guts to make one, I'd be swimming in food dye for years afterwards!

Use gel pastes :) you only need a teeny amount for amazing colours.

Yes, sorry, I'd have 7 different pots of paste in the cupboard for years. I dye icing for kids birthday cakes (so 2/year), and playdoh, and thats it.

Does green turn things grass green? Slightly disappointed with the red I bought to make a ladybird birthday cake - but then I think red (and black) is a difficult colour to dye to?

Sorry for the hi-jack OP

I have red & black, and just a dollop on the end of a cocktail stick was enough to brilliant colours.

They sounds good.
Do you have a brand name, so next time I can get things coloured, please.
Cheers

I guess you make the cake mix in one bowl, then need six extra bowls to make seven.

wem · 21/05/2012 20:32

oh, and Sugarflair for the gel colours :)

nextphase · 21/05/2012 20:37

hmm, used sugarflair Christmas red. Needed quite a bit tho.
Will stick with it. I'm going to do (dinosaur) green next.
Cheers

You can get extra concentrated red, as it is a difficult colour to use.

Morning, I am going to do tie dye. I will use six bowls and have one as a standby.

So what are the best paste ones to use?

Wish me luck!!!!
