I am thinking of making some rhubarb chutney and was wondering if any of it would keep till Christmas?

No problem keeping it until Christmas. I generally keep my apple/pear chutneys in a dark place for 6 months before eating it.

Several years - and as long as it is in a suitable container it will improve as it matures (just finished Christmas Chutney 2008).

Is a glass jar a suitable container?

Glass jar is fine but if it has a metal lid you need to put greaseproof paper on first or the chutney reacts with the metal.

It will be fine at Christmas - chutney should be left at least a couple of months to mature, otherwise it tastes really vinegary and harsh. Small coffee jars usually have plastic lids so you don't need to worry about the vinegar reacting with the metal lid but it is a good idea to put some bicarb and water in the jar for a few hours to get rid of any lingering smells and flavours. You also need to sterilise the jars before potting up the chutney.
