CAKE HELP?

BibiThree · 17/05/2012 14:27

I'm making a Spongebob cake for a friend tonight, the cake tin I have is a rectangle, 10 x 13 inches. Does anyone have ANY idea how much of the ingredients I'd need to use? I really didn't think this through!

thanks all

What cake recipe are you using? Standard sponge? (no pun intended btw)

Standard sponge

Whenever I'm not sure I just make sure I make extra cake mix, fill up the cake tin as needed & put whats left in muffin case so that it doesn't waste :)

I would say a 10x13 tin would require 3 or 4 eggs worth of cake mix, depending how deep you want the cake to be/your tin is. As a general rule, never fill the tin more than halfway up the side with the raw mix, or it might not cook properly in the middle.

Good suggestion rockinhippy - go with 4 eggs worth then make cupcakes/fairy cakes with any leftover mix. These can always be frozen if not needed immediately.

HTH :)

That's a very big tin, I agree with the others, it'll need at least a 4 egg mix and depending on the depth you want it would probably take up to a 6 egg mix.

If it's a 3" deep tin and you want a 3" deep cake, there's no way a 4 egg mix will be anywhere near enough. I would probably go for an 8 egg mix (11 x11" mix is 7 eggs, 12 x 12" mix is 9 eggs) but it will be much better if you do it in two halves, so you could do a 4 egg mix x two to make two layers instead of baking it as one and then splitting it to fill, if that makes sense?

Use this to estimate more accurately.

You are all wonderful, thanks!

I used BlackAffronted's site and it worked perfectly. One happy birthday boy, one nicely risen sponge.
