A few questions please?

To do mash, do you premash by hand then use the white beater thingy?

And can you please suggest some nice easy cake recipes for me to start with?

It's probably too late, but... You mash them with the flat beater, add milk / butter, then whisk at full speed with the wire thing.
Remember to use floury potatoes. I get better results when I overcook them slightly.
