Lovely. You can fry them and serve with rice, salad and some lemon juice, but I like them with lentil Dahl or with CPUs CPUs and chillies.

AgentProvocateur · 09/05/2012 19:53

That's obviously CPUs CPUs.

Shit - COUS COUS!

Coops79 · 09/05/2012 19:54

With couscous. Bake mackerel with olive oil and lemon juice (wrapped in foil). Serve with couscous and mixed or roasted veg. Yummy.

Personally, I like a zingy tomatoe salad with mackerel fillets. chunky pieces of tomatoe, tiny bit of finely sliced onion, chopped parsley and then dress with olive oil and spanish red wine vinegar (if you have) and salt. Or, if you're a salsa person, a tomato salsa is excellent. Serve your fried mackerel fillets with lemon and some new potatoes

Thanks you.

I like the sound of that Bling.

I don't realy like fish, but DH does (and has been told by Dr he needs to eat oily fish twice a week) so i'm making myself try them.

Because they are oily you need rice or bread with them.
If you find the taste overpowering then consider making kedgeree next time.

Cheap way for your DH to have them is buy some mackerel in sauce in a tin and have on toast as a snack/light lunch.

Ambrosius · 10/05/2012 11:25

I usually grill them and serve with a spicy stir fry and noodles. One of my favourite meals! Sezchuan pepper goes very well I find :)

BlingLoving · 10/05/2012 11:39

How do you feel about pate? Or is it something DH could have with his lunch or on a sandwich while you have something else? In which case, my foolproof cheats smoked mackerel pate could be a lifesaver@

buy a packet of smoked mackerel, preferably with pepper on. Remove the skin and roughly chop the mackerel into a bowl. Add a tub of philadelphia light cream cheese (it needs to be light because the full fat makes it too rich). Mush it all up with a fork. Add a teaspoon(ish) of good good french mustard or horseradish (not English mustard) and a generous amount of ground pepper (more if you've got plain fillets). Then squeeze in the juice of half a lemon. Mush some more. Taste. Add more lemon if you want it tarter - ideally, at first taste, it should be a little bit too tart as the lemon flavour mellows.

Serve on sandwiches with some cucumber, or as a dip with nice french bread. Or just as part of a salad platter.

Also, quick fried or grilled fresh macerel fillets are not as "fishy" as you might expect so hopefully you'll actually find them quite tasty.

I had mackerel fillets last night. I typically serve them grilled.

I pour and spread a little bit of olive oil on them, and then I sprinkle some spices: turmeric, ginger, cumin, salt and a pinch of chilli powder.

Last night, I served them with sauteed potatoes and some French beans.

Geranium3 · 11/05/2012 16:42

nigel slater does a yummy recipe mixed in with new potatoes and other yummy ingredients,

littlemissnormal · 15/05/2012 13:36

YY to the mackerel pate! I served it as a starter once in ramekins with clarified butter and peppercorns on top.

wheredidiputit · 15/05/2012 15:45

I did them with spicy stir fry and noodles last week.

And they were nice.

This week we having them with chilli and I'm going to do some boiled pots and veg.

I was surprised how nice they were as they smelled when I was cooking them.

I like fresh mackerel fillets grilled with slices of orange, served with new potatoes and salad.

Peppered smoked mackerel just with horse radish sauce and brown bread & butter.

Gdansk · 19/05/2012 18:19

Grilled with just black pepper and lemon juice, served with a crisp green salad and new potatoes with butter nd chives. Lush.

GetTheeToANunnery · 20/05/2012 18:59

I love them little tins of mackerel mixed with rice and sweet corn, dead easy for lunch.
It's also nice with a salad. Mmm I love mackerel, you've got me wanting some now!

notnowImreading · 20/05/2012 19:04

Mackerel is lovely done on a barbecue (mostly because it doesn't make your house smell if cooked outside). Mango salsa goes nicely - chopped mango, chopped red chilli, lime juice, cucumber if you want to cool it down a bit.

FIFIBEBE · 20/05/2012 19:05

I do that pate too, but without the mustard.
