Deep fried mozarella sticks without a deep fryer

Anyone have any ideas how to replicate deep fried mozarella sticks without deep frying - DD loved these when we ate out, but I don't have a deep fryer and don't want to "spend" lots of oil on a one off.

Anyone know if baking them might work or does the cheese just melt too much inside?

You can buy them (from Tesco) to go in the oven rather than the fryer.

I would guess you might have to double dip them in your egg and breadcrumbs, making sure you flour them first for the egg to stick as the cheese will be a little wet. Spray with oil all over and put into a pretty hot oven. Might take a bit of trial and error.

As an alternative, you could try "mozzarella in carroza" which is basically a shallow fried mozzarella sandwich where the bread is dipped in egg or milk or both so it goes crispy.

here is a Nigella recipe but there are plenty of others.

Yum... now you're reminding me of one of my italian trips where I ate that every day probably - maybe that's where DD gets it from. I'll give it a try tomorrow I think, but also try with just breadcrumbs - 2 layers is a good idea.

Flisspaps They rely on being frozen I think - and if you look at the ingredients have a lot of non mozarella in which may well help it stay solid
