When an American recipe calls for vanilla frosting in large amounts does it just mean a bog standard butter icing which you can then colour or is it something different?

Thanks, I have foolishly agreed to attempt A Stupidly Shaped Big Cake for dds birthday and am struggling with even understanding the recipe.

Am sure she is going to cast an eye over it and say it looks more like a big green poo than a diplodocus at this rate.

Still, at least now the icing will be right.
