Recipe for Malt Loaf?

After a monumental fail yesterday I have been searching for a fail safe recipe for "Soreen" style malt loaf. Some recipes have yeast, some dont - Delia's does, BBC good food looks more like a cake, Eric Lanlard uses bicarb and not much malt.

Anyone been successful and care to share please?

I've had success with the bbc one, it's much better after a couple of days in an airtight tin, gets sticky and squidgy like Soreen

I've got one that I found on the internet somewhere and its very nice:

8oz/225g Sultanas
8oz/225g Raisins
3oz/85g butter
1/2 pt/290ml water
2 tbl malt extract
12oz/ 340g sr flour
1/2 tsp bicarb
pinch salt
8oz/ 225 g soft dark sugar
2 large eggs

  1. Preheat oven to 165C. Grease and flour 2 loaf tins.
  2. Put fruit, butter, malt extract and water in a large saucpan and bring to the boil and simmer for 5 mins. Allow to cool a little.
  3. In a large bowl - sift flour, bicarb, and salt. Stir in sugar.
  4. Pour in warm fruit mixure and add beaten eggs. Mix well.
  5. Bake in centre of oven for 30 mins the check and see if it needs covering with foil for about another 30/40 mins.
