If you are going to give your kid crisps what are the best type?

I think Quavers are the lowest in fat, does that make the better all round for them then other brands?

I normally go for theones you get the little packet of salt in - so that the salt content is, hopefully, a bit less. Rarely buy crisps though as I don't eat them.

mszebra · 13/02/2006 17:04

Sainsbury's own as done in veggie fat.
Anything with the fewest ingredients & no hydrog. fat above all.

GDG · 13/02/2006 17:05

Hardly ever buy crisps but if I do I get walkers lites or hula hoops. Since the boys hardly ever have them, I'm not that bothered about waht they are when tehy do iyswim.

PeachyClair · 13/02/2006 17:09

Well, dh can get through 3 packs a day so he gets savers and they're OK (bizarrely if you check savers type brands they often can't be arsed to add anythng you don't want coz it costs more iyswim). DS's rarely get crisps, but if they do they get Real crisps, as they're local AND nice. I don't eat crisps. Boo hoo.

Used to love wheat crunchies pre- weightwatchers but golden wonder are going under aren't they, dh's work has impounded lots of their stock so it's bye bye to them I guess.

Thomcat · 13/02/2006 17:10

I use them as the occisional treat / bribe when we are out shopping. Not done that oftem but if I'm going to give them would prefer them to be the lesser of the evils!

Thomcat, see here It's Hunker

LovelyBigMuvverers · 13/02/2006 17:14

Organix do nice crisps - DS1 loves them. Nothing nasty in them at all. They look like wotsits.

bubblerock · 13/02/2006 17:15

I think french fries are low in fat, I read in a magazine that the M&S hand baked crisps were the best health wise.

Prufrock · 13/02/2006 18:35

You can get Goodies Organix crisps that are really corn puffs in 3 different flavours, and carrot sticks. If you want proper crisps, then kettle chips do an unsalted version. IMO it's not teh fat content that is teh problem for kids, its teh salt and artificila crap that gets put into stuff liek wotsits that makes them bad

sazhig · 14/02/2006 00:56

Quavers contain msg & disodium 5'-ribonucleotide which I wouldnt even eat myself, let alone give to my children - they are actually banned from foods for children under 3! I have started to read crisp packets very carefully recently after noticing that even walkers ordinary cheese & onion have msg in them - it seems even the humble crisp is bad for you now . We tend to try to get organic ones or failing that the salt n shake crisps - only ingredients are potato & vegetable oil - no nasties! (& no salt - which is far worse for you than fat imo)

waterfalls · 14/02/2006 01:07

If you want to avoid E numbers, ready salted are the only flavour that dont contain them, or better dtill, buy the sakt and shake one, but dont add the salt.

JanH · 14/02/2006 01:15

Sainsbos economy ready-salted, 39p for 6 bags, taste pretty good - will look up the ingredients and report back at some point

Thomcat · 14/02/2006 21:41

Great, thanks for this everyone

Waitrose do a gorgeous apple crisp -can't remember the ingredients (other than the obvious) but I think they were healthy. DD loved them

JanH · 14/02/2006 21:53

Just checked out my Sainsbos basics.

Per 20g bag:

Salt 0.3g
Fat 7.2g (saturates 1.9g)

Ingredients: potatoes, veg oil, salt.

brimfull · 14/02/2006 21:56

our local waitrose used to stock bart's crisps which are natural,no salt ,just potato.

looked for them yesterday and couldn't find them

tassis · 14/02/2006 21:59
