Inspire me about cupcakes <hangs head with shame>

I volunteered to make a nice cake for sil/bils silver anniversary party. I had it all planned out.

Then sil texted me to ask instead for cupcakes in lots of different colours with sparkly bits and sprinkles

This is so not me - but any tasteful ideas on what to do ?

I thought of vanilla, lemon, and choc cakes with swiss meringue buttercream in vanilla/lemon/strawberry flavours, but am low on other inspiration.

I like how Lindy Smith does some of her cupcakes, like mini cakes with thin layers of sugarpaste rather than heaps of buttercream.

If i'm making lots of cakes I do a few with butter cream swirls and a few with a thin sugar paste layer.
