What do you love in Aldi? I'm trying to cut my shopping bill and we have an Aldi near us so any of your MN recommendations would be really helpful. Thanks

The Super 6 fruit and veg? What is that?

I only go in for their brioche, which probably isn't that cheap.

johnnycomelurky · 25/04/2012 19:25

I second the fruit and veg and frozen fish. We also buy their lean mince, sliced Edam, German ham or salami, and the 99p roasted veg frozen pizza. I put some salami and extra cheese on the pizza and it's nice. We also often buy cereals there too. I think it's a bit of trial and error to see what you like and what you don't. I don't like the wine - but I do like wine generally Wink

SecretSquirrels · 25/04/2012 19:25

I get my main shop online from Tesco and top up from Aldi.
Olive oil
Pain Au Chocolate
Norpak (lurpaky type stuff)
Olives
Fresh fruit and Veg
Free range chicken and eggs
Soft drinks

But for wine Lidl is better, it's just slightly emabarrassing going in there just for wine Wink

journoem · 25/04/2012 19:28

Ready made flavoured cous cous that comes in a pack - roasted vegetable flavour is the best one, makes for a lovely quick lunch.
Harvest morn cereal bars are yummy, and they do some white chocolate with hazelnuts and that is amazing - I'm a real chocoholic and it's one of the best I've ever tried.
Bratwurst and sliced meats are also nice and quite cheap as is their frozen lemon sole and salmon fishcakes with sweet chilli sauce.

I just moved house and now we have no Aldi nearby, I'm very sad! I love walking around there and seeing all the products I've never seen before Grin

bagpuss · 25/04/2012 19:29

Their pantene a like shampoo and conditioner is good as is the face wash (Lacura).

Bags of their own brand kettle chips and gin are also favourites in this house!

I second the frozen fish and the fruit and veg too, oh and the biscuits and chocolate bars get the thumbs up from the dcs!

bigfunnylass · 25/04/2012 20:33

their continental meats are fab for antipasti, they do great olives, meats n cheeses, they do a fresh lasagne in a foil tray too which can be frozen, delicious!also their version of tunnocks caramel wafer biscuits and jaffa cakes go down well with the kids too.

Milliways · 25/04/2012 20:33

Their washing tablets and dishwasher tablets are great. D/Washer tabs are a "Which Best buy.

I also get bin liners, tin foil, w/up liquid etc there, and fruit, veg if I am in for the other stuff. DH likes the cheeses, and DD lives at Uni on Aldi veg in pasta mixed with their own brand Philadelphia stuff.

The Baileys Cheesecake was a hit. :)

Pinot Noir.

flowwithit · 25/04/2012 20:59

red pesto rosso is wonderful (dried pasta not so)
good price on hovis bread
lovely seeded white batch loaf
titan bars just like mars bars
fruit and veg always good
value pack bacon excellent value with little rind
good cold meats
creamy coleslaw nice
nachos really good
multipacks crisps favourite in this house
tortilla wraps good size and price
curry instant noodles liked also
frozen pizzas reliable
raisins and other dried fruit excellent quality
magnum washing up liquid

RatDesPaquerettes · 25/04/2012 22:53

I recommend:

  • Toro Loco Tempranillo and Freeman's Bay Sauvignon Blanc.
  • washing up liquid
  • toilet paper
  • bleech
  • pure orange juice (as good as Tropicana)
  • cheddar cheese
  • plain yoghurt
  • butter (they have one with salt crystals too now)
  • lardons (for quiches)
  • avocados, mushrooms, spinach, cherry tomatoes and vine tomatoes, peppers
  • raspberries and blueberries
  • tins of tuna, sardines
  • tins of peeled tomatoes
  • tomato paste, passata
  • olive oil
  • pasta, gnocchi
  • UHT milk
  • toothpaste, toothbrushes
  • touche eclat equivalent.

I personally avoid:

  • lettuce
  • bananas (too many in a pack for me)
  • mangoes and pineapples (they never ripened Sad)
  • croissants (as they don't have butter croissants)
  • chorizo (as it is a complete pain to peel)
  • frozen fish (not sure what I bought but I did not rate it).

I am sure there is a lot more I buy there but you get the gist. Most of the stuff is great, and don't get me started on the Special Buys. Grin

flowwithit · 25/04/2012 22:57

Wow I can't fit anymore on my list! It's off the page so there must be lots of good stuff in there. Just got to get my head round the speedy tills now

Frozen lamb shanks
Frozen four bird roasts
Anything Italian
German ham and cold meats
Smoked salmon
Lasagne
Wine
Champagne

AfishhCalledElvira · 25/04/2012 23:08

Their chocolate rice cakes are amazing and you can't get anything remotely similar anywhere else I've found. I get all my shopping here bar specialist stuff like coconut oil. Their seed packs are good too (with goji berries), unsalted nut mixes, wine, probiotic onkon (?) type yoghurt tubs, free range eggs/chicken, sausages, fruit/veg on special 6 offer, broccoli for 55p! I couldn't afford to eat the foods I like if it wasn't for aldi....(waves hands in worship) Blush

AfishhCalledElvira · 25/04/2012 23:09

Salmon wellington is vv good for a treat. Pesto salmon parcels are fab aswell.

thebestisyettocome · 25/04/2012 23:12

Frozen prawns
Cheese (inc sliced cheese. They have those sandwich bags you put in the toaster. Together they make quick grilled cheese sandwiches!)
Smoothies. All natural ingrediants and v nice indeed.
Free range chickens
Gammon joints
Cooked chicken drumsticks.
Posh onion soup
Creme frais
Most fruit and veg but esp the Pink Lady apples
Dishwasher tablets
Binbags
Tomato ketchup

Popoozle · 25/04/2012 23:18

Well everything really! I can honestly say I have never bought a product from Aldi that I've been disappointed with - and I do my main shop there every week! Things I particularly like & would make the effort to go to Aldi for, even if I happened to do the main shop elsewhere (unlikely) would be:

Lasagne (the one in the chiller, I've not tried the frozen)
Soft Drinks (cola, fizzy orange, lemonade etc. - also Fruit Shoot type drinks Blush and bottles of water).
Super 6 Fruit & Veg (it's amazing what you can get for 39p!).
Golden Fries (a type of oven chip).
Fresh Whole Chicken (cheaper & taste better than others we have tried from other supermarkets).
Baked Beans (Corale).
Almat Laundry Products (usually the little sachet things but all are good and cheap).

Enjoy Grin.

FoofFighter · 25/04/2012 23:20

Magnum washing up liquid 59p one not the more expensive one, beat Fairy in a which or GoodHousekeeping institute test

Racer chocolate bars, 60p for 5, fake Snickers, really really close to the original, more so than Asda/tesco's versions anyway

The fruit and veg on offer at 39p/49p/69p etc

2 large chicken legs for 99p

Corale baked beans

Hovis is half the price there than at other supermarkets

Sliced cheese packs (in fact pretty much all of the cheese)

OH likes the coleslaw and frikkadellen burgers/bites.

FoofFighter · 25/04/2012 23:21

yy to the oven chips, those and Lidl's ones the same are the only oven chips aside from posh Mccain ones I like.

Eclairwaldorf · 25/04/2012 23:24

Second the coleslaw, DH loved it and he is a right brand snob. Loved telling him where it was from Grin

LakeFlyPie · 25/04/2012 23:35

My general shop includes:
Mini shredded wheats
Oats
Extremely exotic (!) or very nutty muesli
Bread (Hovis or Warburtons)
Pitta breads or wraps
Part baked rolls (think they're called dinner rolls) pack
Any of the part baked bread range e.g. ciabattas, rolls, baguettes
Soreen malt loaf
Pasta / gnocchi
Passata
Tinned toms
Baked beans
Kidney beans
All of the fresh fruit / veg, (avocados are consistently good compared to other supermarkets IME)
Garlic bread
Houmous
Smoked salmon
Good range of deli meats esp spicey chorizo rings
Yogurts esp fat free natural if you are looking for low fat or greek yog if not
Gherkins
Frozen pizzas (and I'm a thin crust pizza snob)
Dried fruit / nuts
Nappies and fragrance free wipes (if you need them)
I rate the Lacura range, esp foot cream (10% urea i.e. more than flexitol) and make up seems good.
Booze: I didn't like the highly recommended (on here) Toro Loco but really rate the Vila Decana (I think it's called) rioja. Also a lovely Orvieto Classico (which I can't find anymore).
The chocolate is fab esp dark.

Is that enough for now? Grin

LakeFlyPie · 25/04/2012 23:37

oh and forgot about the free range chickens and lean minced beef!

FoofFighter · 25/04/2012 23:41

Fake Southern Comfort, Malibu and Archers - they are less ABV% which isn't nec a bad thing anyway!

Didn't like the garlic and coriander naan bread, or the cheapest bag of white rice they do, and not really keen on the garlic bread, it's ok not nasty - just not garlicky enough.

FoofFighter · 25/04/2012 23:42

Sorry keep recalling things!

Tinned toms, same price as value ones but the flavour and thickness and quality of Napolina
