Can BSE be spread via milk?

Not sure if this is the right area to ask this question, but I have been reading the latest news about a Dairy Cow in California that has developed BSE,.The Huffington Post says that there is no concern as BSE cannot be transmitted through milk, I thought it could, I remember trying to find organic formula milk for my babies during the 80's & 90's here in the UK because I was worried that BSE could be transmitted this way to humans. I find it odd that if BSE can be transmitted through blood and just about every other area of a cow then surely milk is infective, are thee any scientists out there that can answer my question please?

Here is a link for anyone who wants the story. Its a random mutation in one cow in california. Its the WHO who says there's no concern, not a Huff journalist. There's no worry because scientists have looked for evidence of transmission via milk and found none.

A few minutes more digging, multiple sources essentially saying, scientists have looked for prions in milk and found none.

Gosh I haven't heard talk of BSE for years, now mentioned twice in one day. Once on the radio about an hour ago (not the article mentioned above) and now here. Hope its not coming to the fore in news again.

What was it on the radio - something unrelated?

It certainly shouldn't come back to the fore based on one poor random cow on the other side of the world.

SheepsEyes · 25/04/2012 15:53

Its only transmissible through spinal cord, brain etc. Dont worry.

RCOR · 25/04/2012 17:18

Yes totally unrelated mention on the radio but funny to hear/read it twice in space of an hour when not heard mention of BSE for years.
