How much is yours?
We are family of 4 dc 11 and 13yrs and ours is £150 ! I think that's too much so I must be going wrong somewhere.

2 adults, one 4yo.
Bad week £70 (or good whichever way you look at it, normally includes some treats due to having a bit more to spend)

Good, normal week between £40-£60.

£150 a week is a awful lot! for a family of four! What do you buy?

Mrsrobertduvall · 22/04/2012 19:54

Mine is about £200 Blush
dcs 15 and 13, me and dh.

anthonytrollopesrevenge · 22/04/2012 19:58

Are you including cleaning stuff, laundry stuff, household stuff generally OP or just food? It is a lot for just food. There are 4 of us but the DCs are primary and so eat less I expect, and even on a rare profligate week we rarely go over £100 and I usually buy more expensive organic things when I can and expensive laundry liquid and soap cos DD's skin disagrees with the cheaper brands I've attempted to use so far. On average I'd say £80-£90, including cleaning stuff. I find buying online stops me impulse buying, if I buy online I tend to buy what is needed rather than things I happen to fancy. But I'm not really trying to economise, I just hate wasting food and throwing it away.

flowwithit · 22/04/2012 20:02

For us that includes cleaning stuff loo rolls washing stuff as well as food.

BonkeyMollocks · 22/04/2012 20:03

I still think that is alot with everything all in.

Do you meal plan? Impulse buy? Do you do a list?

BlackAffronted · 22/04/2012 20:03

For me, DH and 3 DC I am about £30 a week for food, and we eat well.

£40 a week max, family of 4. We eat well, a lot of veggie meals, meat maybe 3-4 times a week. We don't drink often.

crypes · 22/04/2012 20:07

I do a family of four shop weekly at £120 and that includes lots of luxuries inc.beer, wine and choc.

black Is that just food? Or cleaning and toiletries as well?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/04/2012 20:09

About 90-100 pounds a week, I think, for 2 adults and 2 teens. I tend to do a 'big' Sainsbo's shop about every ten-12 days, for about a hundred and then top-ups in between. 150-200 a week seems an awful lot.

pumpkinsweetie · 22/04/2012 20:11

£110 for a family of six, me, dh & 4 dcs, differs between £90-£110 depending on what we buy and about £15 for bread/milk& salad during week

mrspnut · 22/04/2012 20:11

There are 4 of us and I spend about £130 - £160 a week. That includes household/ pet stuff as well as alcohol and food.
I do meal plan but I usually buy extras for the freezer when I see a bargain.

crypes · 22/04/2012 20:13

'Blackaffronted' you should scan us your receipt for shopping because i dont believe you spend £30 p.week for a family of four and eat well !!!

flowwithit · 22/04/2012 20:13

Oh yes includes pet food too. We eat out with Dc's once per month and have fish and chips or Indian take away once per month too.

mamij · 22/04/2012 20:16

There's me, DH, DD1 (2.5 years) and DD2 (5 months). I spend on average £100 a week on fresh fruit and veg, meat, dairy, pasta, tins (including cleaning items, soft drinks etc).

Maybe I should change the organic stuff, milk, yoghurt, veg and see if that brings it down enough?
I try to buy offers ect and do it online so not tempted by stuff I don't need.

OP posts:
FaceCrack · 22/04/2012 20:20

How do all of you do it.
We spend £70-120 for 3 of us and dd is only 13 months. That includes cleaning products and nappies /wipes.
We don't eat any processed food and eat meat 4-5 times a week.
I can't work out how to do it cheaper.

ethelb · 22/04/2012 20:20

as a general rule I think to eat well you will find it hard to spend under £20 a week pp. I am quite savvy and often spend £35 pp.

So you are not going far wrong if you are eating well and have a few treats tbh.

You need to spend someoney keeping a well stocked cupboard so you don't think sod it and get a takeaway two days before you are due to go shopping again!

Plus when I was 11 I was eating as an adult so people talking about how much their 2.5 yo eats aren't really in the same league I am afraid. (sorry, I know there are other costs!)

BonkeyMollocks · 22/04/2012 20:25

Try and look at it like you have NO money.

What do you need? What don't you need? Is this essential? Can you get the same thing cheaper?

Fruit and veg, buy the offers. You get a good mix week by week.

Own brands.

We used to spend close to £100 on just myself and dh pre ds. Post ds closer to £120.

Then one day we were in the shit money wise and you learn....fast...because you have to. I bought own brands, though through what I needed. Did a list in priority of what we needed. If we didn't have enough money then things from the bottom of the list got scratched.
