How about dog milk as a solution to cashing in on the pooch without actually losing the unit of production?

BoffinMum · 25/04/2012 19:17

There's a memorable line in Red Dwarf ... "The dog milk is always the last to go" ...

Ambi · 25/04/2012 19:36

Avg £50pw, 3 of us and a dog. Mainly Aldi shop, Costco for washing powder, tea, coffee & dog food. Top up at local shop for bread when they have offers. I save money by having a milkman £20 pm and stops random shopping when nipping out for milk. If DH is working nights, I'll have a sandwich instead of cooking a meal for mw.

Would people that use Costco recommend it?
I live in Norfolk, nearest one to us is Milton Keynes/London... but considering if we saved up and got loads of what we wanted, we wouldn't be doing it regularly.
Do they sell nappies and formula? if I could save a fair bit on those I figure it would be well worth it...

Chandon · 26/04/2012 07:22

I used to love Costco, but would not think it is worth it if it is more than an hour's drive.

What they have varies quite a bit, so you can't be sure what there is.

BulletProofMum · 26/04/2012 10:35

I definitely recommend it. Most things are much cheaper and yes they do nappies etc.

You do need a lot of storage though!

MadameChinLegs · 26/04/2012 10:54

I get loo rolls, dry cat food and soap powder. I sometimes get Desperados in bulk as none of the shops round my way sell it and it is yummy.

They sell Huggies, I know, but not sure what other brands. I have no brand loyalty wrt to nappies though, and just pick up the shops own brand of wherever I am.

Frontpaw · 26/04/2012 11:38

Do you need a card/join up for Costco (like Makro)?

Chandon · 26/04/2012 15:11

yes, google it :) I am sure they have a website

Frontpaw · 26/04/2012 16:31

Bloody hell, they are miles away. Are they really really worth it or would I need to buy a hundred loo rolls and a vat of olives to make it work?

BulletProofMum · 26/04/2012 20:50

You can only buy 100 loo rolls! It's worth it if you have a large car and a big garage. I only go once a month if that and invariable spend over 500. It has so much more than loo rolls and olives though. Very dangerous for impulse buying!

Two adults, two smallish DC who both have school meals. Ours is about £50 a week.

Soditall · 29/04/2012 11:51

We eat a lot better on our smaller budget than a lot do on a higher one.We used to spend £170 a week and so much got chucked. Now I do a meal planner and we don't waste food.

Things we eat all HM salmon in sauce potatoes and vegetables, spaghetti bolognese mixed salads and garlic bread,Roast lamb dinner,Sausage casserole potatoes and vegetables, chicken korma vegetable curry popadoms naan breads, quiche potato wedges coleslaw, lamb burgers j potatoes and salad,Cottage pie and veggies,Moussaka herby potatoes and roasted veggies,Roast Beef dinner,Glazed Gammon,Roast Chicken Dinner,Beef in ale sauce cheesy mash and root vegetables,Steak chunky chips mushrooms onions tomatoes and peas,Chinese Banquet. It amazes me now to look back at how much we used to spend.I'd never go back to that way of shopping.

And I hate food shopping so never do top ups.

Averages about £60 pw for all food (inc. pack lunches for school and work) plus cleaning stuff, toiletries, etc. for 2 adults + 2 dds 13 and 10. Mostly Sainsbury's, top-ups at Tesco. It's gone up noticeably, from about £50ish last year, so I thought it was pretty expensive, but looking at others it maybe isn't so bad.

PartOfAWednesday · 29/04/2012 12:14

I think that it's (relatively) cheap because we eat very little meat. Dd1 is vegetarian and it's easier for all 4 of us to eat veggie a few times a week.
