How much is yours?
We are family of 4 dc 11 and 13yrs and ours is £150 ! I think that's too much so I must be going wrong somewhere.

OP posts:
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/04/2012 20:27

We're veggie, so I guess that keeps costs down a bit.

I only buy organic milk and organice carrots now - unless there is a v v good offer on organice anything else. I've also started buying Basics yoghurt instead of Yeo Valley or Greek and basics mozerella/feta.

whenskiesaregrey · 22/04/2012 20:29

Ours is £100-ish a week, and that is for me, DH and 2.8 DS. That includes washing up stuff, shampoo, other toiletries and dog food. It is better now DS is out of nappies because that saves £20-£30 a month.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/04/2012 20:29

organice? How on earth did I manage to do that twice?

£100 for me, DH and 3 DCs (5, 3 and 16mo). That includes nappies, wipes, washing powder, cleaning products, packed lunches for everyone and a couple of bottles of wine. I semi- meal plan and order online through sainsburys. I could do it on about £65 if I really tried and cut out alcohol/dropped a brand/didn't buy treats

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/04/2012 20:43

£35 for us, £4.80 cat.

We dont eat rubbish either, DH is diabetic so it has to be healthy.

scabbysnake · 22/04/2012 20:45

me & 2dc - if i'm careful £25-£30 if not then a tenner more than that.
i shop around to get things cheaper, we eat healthy & well, dc eat lots of fruit & veg, we don't have meat that often usually just chicken once or twice a month.

topbannana · 22/04/2012 20:48

Around £100 a week all in (except for pet food) This includes cleaning stuff, toiletries, beer etc. Thats for me, DH and DS (7) At the moment I also buy a couple of bits every week for holiday so that its not a huge bill when we go and we have some sexy food when we are away :o

We eat very well (we are moderate drinkers, do not smoke and very rarely eat out so food is our "thing") We eat meat at least 6 days a week, normally 7, and all our meals are freshly prepared which does cost more compared to buying regular prepared stuff. As mentioned above, even a simple jacket potato with cheese and salad could cost £5-6 for 3 of us (we use organic produce where possible)

We could cut it down a lot but if we can afford to not compromise on quality then we won't :)

BonkeyMollocks · 22/04/2012 20:49

I think top just hit the nail on the head.

If you can afford it then there is no problem!

whenskiesaregrey · 22/04/2012 20:50

I really am in awe of those that spend so little. I wish I could. In our house, DH pays the bills, and I do the food shop (and get other bits and pieces) so it really would be in my best interest to make it cheaper. The cheapest I can get it is £70, and that is cutting right down.

pumpkinsweetie · 22/04/2012 20:51

Please tell me Mnetters how you manage to keep within £25-30 , what shops do you go to & does it include nappies & toiletries?
Intrigued to know as we could do with saving some money Wink

mumtomoley · 22/04/2012 20:53

I am shocked by spending £200 per week on groceries - That's nearly £1000 per month Shock

Just totted up my supermarket spends for this month from my bank statement and it's £265.62 for the last month. DH has spent too but no more than £100 so at most £370 for the month and this has been a pretty extravagant month. This is for 2 adults, 1 x 1yo (though 4 days as week I only provide 1 meal a day), plus 2 x teenage step-DS's at weekends.

mumtomoley · 22/04/2012 20:55

Actually, I say I'm shocked, but thinking about it it's probably pretty easily done - things in the supermarket generally cost around double what I think they should do [cheapskate]

i do my main shop at asda, get my eggs from the market, fruit when its cheaper from the fruit shop - sometimes they have pineapples for 39p, 2 punnets of strawberries for £1, loo roll, tin toms, noodles, cereal & any other bargain they have like washing powder home bargain, sometimes go to lidl but sometimes i don't find them much cheaper unless they have their cucumber at 39p!
i get a bag of carrots from sain for 75p i think it is, these do for carrot sticks, carrot scones, bulking out spag bol, grated with salad, grated in wraps, carrot & lentil soup for my lunch.
i make homemade wraps for dc lunch or for enchilarders.
a huge bag of lentils is £2.29 in tesco food aisle this bag last for a couple of weeks & most meals are made from them or include them.
i get my milk from iceland for £1 for 4 pints.

PuffPants · 22/04/2012 21:02

A fortune... way more than that and we are just 2 adults and a toddler! Blush

I spent £90 in Waitrose yesterday but not entirely sure what on. Enough to cover food for the weekend and a few household items plus wine etc. I'll be back again tomorrow I'm sure. I buy lots of organic fruit & veg and meat is organic too - I buy the most expensive meat possible, I'd rather go veggie than eat cheap meat. We buy far too much expensive chocolatey junk.

I fully accept that I spend loads on food and drink, don't budget at all and fritter it all away on whatever catches my eye. We are not meal planners and shop most days.

I do like a BOGOF deal though.

Is that the sort of thing you wanted to hear?

GrinBlushBlushWink

topbannana · 22/04/2012 21:05

Cheers Bonkey, most people I know think we are crazy :)

What I should maybe have mentioned is that if we are very short one week then we compromise in other areas (one of my bugbears is walking the ginger dog locally on the scabby walk rather than driving to lovely woodsevery day) Food is our thing and we do not take exotic holidays or drive a new car, they are our compromise. Each to their own I think :o

scabbysnake · 22/04/2012 21:05

toilet paper is decent i get 9 or 12 rolls for £2, i don't have juice just squash

TheArmadillo · 22/04/2012 21:06

We spend £100 on everything (including top ups) and that includes all household stuff - e.g. cleaning/laundry stuff, nappies, cat stuff, booze for dh. Me, dh, 7yo ds and toddler dd (plus the cat).

I don't buy organic but I buy very little processed stuff (though admittedly I buy some bread products). And that is all our meals as we take packed lunches to school/work. We also waste very little. Some weeks we live off leftovers out the freezer but then I use the spare money to stock up on cleaning stuff. I shop around and use basics brands.

However dh wants meat at every meal (apart from breakfast) and I buy good stuff (though economical cuts) from the butchers. I go to 3 or 4 supermarkets and a couple of local shops to pick the best prices.

I do a main shop at ALDI and I get

free range chicken
free range eggs

all fruit and veg which is often 39p. Cucumbers were only 39p this week and they are over £1 in Waitrose.

tins tomatoes
tins kidney beans
crisps
biscuits
parmesan
yorkshire puds
pizza
chorizo

loo roll
cleaning stuff
kitchen roll
cling film
kitchen foil

and then I top up with Waitrose bargains.

tonight I got some meals for the freezer that I can use for the children when I cannot be bothered to cook!

sometimes but not every week I go to the local 99p shop and stock up on all the treats for packed lunches. mini bags of party rings or cadburys fingers which are over £1 in Sains or Tesco are v cheap in there.

I also got Malteser hot choc there which is very pricey in the supermarkets and ds loves it.

Collision · 22/04/2012 21:14

And I avoid Tesco like the plague!
