The Captain America shield cake

Can I buy the icing already red and blue - I've seen white. Do I need to buy anything special to smooth it on or can you just use your hands? Also the best cake to make to make something like this as well would be good. I am not very good at cakes and esp not very good at decorating! This looks to me, but I could be wrong, to be a reasonably easy one to try?

I think use a cake for the torso but use polystyrene for the head - that seems to be what the pros use - and a sturdy dowell/bit of wood to put on to the cake
